Ordered takeout at 6:50pm on a Friday night, and was told food would be ready in 35 minutes. Arrived at exactly 7:25pm, only to be told it wasn't ready, it would be a few more minutes. Customers were waiting both inside and outside for a table to open up so I went back to the car. After waiting 15 minutes in the car, went back in, and the order still was not ready. Inside was busy, all 6 tables were packed, and I overheard customers being told that wait time for a table was over an hour. There were 2 cooks in the kitchen, 2 people expiditing take out orders and working the cash register, and 2 more servers working front of house and tables. When my order was finally ready, I paid promptly and left at about 7:50pm, an hour after I ordered.
Our order: 2 egg rolls, crab rangue, sesame chicken, sweet and sour chicken, veggie lo mein, won ton soup, and egg drop soup. Both chicken entrees came with white rice (we were given one pint and one smaller box of rice).
Now for the breakdown.....
Egg rolls had good color, but the dough/wrappers were thick and gummy and hard to chew. They were crispy on the outside, but did not seem like the wrappers were fully cooked. If they had been, the outside would likely have burned due to the thickness.
Crab rangue were well cooked, crispy wrap throughout with good color, but the filling was all cream cheese...we had difficulty finding any crab or even crab flavor.
Sweet and sour chicken filled a pint cardboard container. It was average to mediocre, nothing special. The sauce that accompanied the chicken was provided in two small covered cups (similar to the kind you would expect to find bleu cheese dressing in with your chicken wings) and wasn't enough for my husband to both dip his chicken and use on his rice. Sauce had good pineapple flavor.
Sesame chicken was given in a round plastic take-out container, which had more broccoli than chicken, and even with both meat and veg, the container was only about 2/3 full. Perhaps I had high expectations, but I am used to a full container with very little vegetable garnish, especially since I ordered sesame chicken, NOT chicken and broccoli (definitely not as advertised). The sauce had little flavor, and seemed like it was just soy sauce and peanut oil (which floated in a layer on top) with a few sesame seeds, red pepper flakes, and sliced garlic. Chicken was cooked well, with minimal batter, but overall the flavor profile was too oily and salty.
Veggie lo mein was very oily, and was missing the veggies (not entirely, but they were sparse). The noodles were very chewy, and stuck in our teeth, not something we were expecting.
Egg drop soup was average.
Won ton soup was off.....the broth had a funny aftertaste almost like fruit juice, and the won ton wrappers had the same gummy hard-to-chew consistency we experienced with the egg rolls and lo mein. There was very little meat filling inside the won tons, and they were hard to choke down.
After reading multiple positive reviews for this restaurant, my husband and I had high expectations, since we have been disappointed by other mediocre Chinese take-out restaurants in the area. We were underwhelmed by Ginger & Garlic, and will actually consider going back to the mediocre 'brown sauce' restaurants we have complained about in the past. We will...
Read moreThe food is very good but the restaurant and the staff are unacceptable.
While you eat in the VERY small dining room people are walking by your table or standing around your table waiting to pick up food. If it is summer the dining room is VERY hot and in winter you have to wear a jacket. The icy blast from the take outs opening the door are an added bonus.
They advertise their hours as closing at 8:30, 9 or 9:30 - but lately they close whenever they feel like it AND don't try and arrive within a half hour of closing because you are told they are no longer serving and sent packing.
This place has been in business for 25 years and the food is great. The establishment is forgetting the customers have stuck with them even as they moved 4 times and now they are treating these same customers badly. I will no longer frequent this restaurant because they are RUDE.
Watch what you are charged. Their online menu does not match the prices you are charged in the restaurant.
What type of chinese restaurant charges you for tea?!?!?! It's bad enough the water they serve comes right from the tap that is in the dining room. Low class establishment. Spend your money elsewhere.
UPDATE: Some friends wanted to go here this past weekend. HUGE mistake. The dining room has 5 people standing around and sitting waiting for takeout and there was 1 table left, by the door. It was so cold we had to eat with our coats on. No apology from the server, in fact all the server did was grunt and complain. The food took over 30 minutes to arrive with the comment, "there is a lot of take out tonight". Maybe they should either become a take out only if you are going to keep sit down customers waiting. As for the food? Bland. Very...
Read moreVery disappointed with the service at Ginfer and Garlic. I used to go there a lot but hadn't in a while. I wanted chinese food tonight so chose here since I love it so much. After asking for a plate so I could just eat my meal there (there are 6 tables in the dining area) he instantly became very rude, made sure I knew he didn't want me to stay and eat. After inquiring why there were tables if they didn't really "do" dine in as he told me, he again got extremely rude, told me not to ask questions, and told me to leave, get out. I did asked to speak to a manager (turns out he is the manager) so I asked to speak to the owner, (his mother, she doesn't speak english) he demanded I stop making things hard for him. I'm not sure if he was just having a bad day, however service like that is unacceptable anywhere. If you are thinking of order from here, I encourage you to...
