My friends wanted to try this place. New to Pittsford and in a location that has had failing business after failing business. We were seated promptly. We were served water pre-poured in the glasses. I took a sip and had to spit it out. It was cucumber infused water. We were never warned about this. I hate cucumber…it seems like diners should be informed of this as people might have a food allergy.
I have a gluten intolerance, so they had options to have items made gluten-free…which I found out just means they put in gluten-free soy sauce. I ordered chicken and broccoli, bland and boring. I wanted to know if I could have fried rice rather than just white or brown rice. The server said there was no option for that and they absolutely could not do that. My only option was to have two entrees and have one of them be fried rice. I was willing to pay an up charge for the side of fried rice, but the answer was still no. Okey-dokey. My meal came. It was a hearty portion, but the food was so salty, it was inedible. The excuse was that gluten-free soy has much more salt (?). I sent it back and chose not to replace it.
My friend ordered the seaweed salad and wanted some shrimp put on top of it. There was an option on the menu to add protein to any salad. The server told her that option was not available for her salad. She then asked for a side of shrimp (to then put on her salad). Nope. She couldn’t have that either.
The atmosphere was fine. The servers were not well trained. We chose to sit and chat for a while after paying for the meal. The dining room was about 1/4 full, so there were plenty of seats. Our server continued to come to our table, look around the table and walk away…kinda hovering.
My suggestion for this restaurant is to be more flexible with ordering options (especially in this town🙄) and train your servers on the food allergy options. I doubt we’ll...
Read moreI had an amazing dinner at JBC! The staff was so attentive and helpful, and the restaurant is so clean, bright, and welcoming!
The food was fantastic - I highly recommend the takoyaki appetizer (octopus, tempera fried balls/dumplings), the tonkotsu ramen entree, and the creamy custard buns! The creamy custard buns aren't as sweet as you'd expect - they only have a touch of sweetness - but so delicious and I loved the presentation! The broth of the tonkotsu ramen was so warm and comforting, and not too salty. The takoyaki was definitely the highlight for me!
I also bought the scallion pancake and I did enjoy it, but it was $6 for only 1 pancake, which felt like a bit of a misstep and I probably won't spend $6 for 1 pancake again. Also, I personally enjoyed the cucumber and lemon infused water, but a member of my party doesn't like cucumber and didn't realize it was infused in the water - she just thought the water tasted funny! Perhaps you can let customers know beforehand and give them the option of having a different water.
The drinks we had were great! We had the fall inspired Ikiru with tequila and cinnamon syrup which was perfect, and I had the JBC Mule which I loved!
Overall, a great experience and I will definitely be...
Read moreWe had an OK experience at JBC. I will definitely go back and check them out again when they are up and running. We went within their firs month of opening so they probably got the kinks out by now!
Positives: drink - it was really good. atmosphere and location. server was great. They have outside seating.
The food was OK. Good, but nothing special. But the reason for the 3 stars was that the food took over an hour to come out. The server apologized at the end and said that we should come back in a couple of months after they aren't in the soft opening anymore, but if they knew it was going to take that long, they should have limited the customers or warned them.
All in all, hoping to try again since it seems like it could be a great place, but it was not a great...
