There's sushi that is served in truly Japanese sushi restaurants, then there's good sushi at Zen in Danbury, and then there is the "other" sushi. Based on the reviews here, I thought I'd try the "Best in Brewster" (as stated on their website) Aji Sushi. Actually, there are no other sushi places in Brewster so, there's that. Ordered the Sushi Deluxe and an extra eel/avocado roll for take out. The place had a "old" fried smell. Was only there waiting 5 minutes and the mrs said she smelled it on my clothes when I got back in the car. The food - I understand how tough it's been for the restaurant industry lately and can accept the sushi pieces being smaller than usual. Zen in Danbury is doing the same thing and that's cool. As long as the quality is still good. Here the fish seemed fresh enough (that's why 2 stars and not 1) but the rice was not. If you truly love sushi, then you know it starts with the rice! This rice seemed to be like mashed up, re-steamed day-old rice with some rice pieces feeling more dry than others. The menu said "tuna roll" but it was chopped up like a spicy/crunchy tuna roll but it was neither, just chopped and made with the same funky rice. Same for the avocado/eel roll with almost no eel. The shaved pickled ginger and the small wasabi dab both had a sitting-out-too-long funky taste to it too. Same with the miso soup. Well, I...
Read moreI read the reviews and thought it was going to be an awesome place and boy were we disappointed. The food was absolutely terrible. The food tasted like it was already cooked and reheated. We had shrimp hibachi and the steak and scallop hibachi. They were both terrible, I wasn't even sure if it was really scallops because it didn't look out tasted like it. Oh and the shrimp hibachi came with the dresser if a big black hair in it. Before you ask I know it wasn't mine because I am bald. Thankfully most of it had no flavor to it. The shumai tasted like it was microwaved. And the California roll was just ok. We ordered water to drink and the glasses were both filthy and the soup bowls were all scratched up and the paint was coming off inside the soup. To make things worse the seats in the booths are basically plywood with the same carpet on the floor covering it. Talk about a pain in the coolie it was beyond uncomfortable! We really tried to give this place a chance. But it just kept getting worse and worse. The service was good at least. I really don't understand how we had a different experience than everyone else but after spending $60 here we had to go down the road and get something else to eat. Will not be back here again. It is the first Japanese food we...
Read moreI’ve been meaning to try Aji Sushi for years, but the questionable reviews always kept me away. A friend and I decided to stop in today, on a Sunday, around noon time and found the restaurant to be empty, except for staff. A couple of staff members were at the cluttered sushi counter, seemingly preparing takeout orders, while others were sitting in booths eating or on their phones, waiting for customers. Not the best “dining environment,” but we were hungry and decided to give the restaurant a try.
We were quickly seated and attended to. Everything was plainly decorated, but the seating was private, the booths were fairly comfortable, and the restaurant had nice lighting. The menu was large and had a lot of great options for lunch.
My friend and I ordered a sushi lunch combo that came with three types of rolls—we decided on the yellowtail, salmon and avocado, and the California —and a choice of soup or salad. To my surprise, all of the sushi looked beautiful and tasted fresh, and at $14.95 was a great lunch option that was...
