I had lunch with the hubby this past Saturday at Mark's Hometown'Cue in Warrensburg (Exit 23). Usually, I am a wait a couple of weeks for the kinks to work out kinda person, but the call of good BBQ 20 minutes away (actually 35 today due to crazy tourist traffic) was too strong.
This place is the real deal, y'all. I could smell all of the wonderful bbq smells the second I stepped out of the car. It can be a bit confusing to find, as it is located in an old pizza shop and the previous store sign is pretty predominant driving by. I am sure in time that will come down.
Onto the most important part - the food. We were treated to a slice of brisket while waiting and it was absolutely heaven; moist but not too much fat and cooked until it was fall apart tender. Our order included: brisket nachos, beef and cheddar sammy, small side of coleslaw, and small side of potato salad. Seriously delicious food. This isn't their first time running a storefront, but still, 1st day open and they were slaying it.
The sandwich was great - love the barbecued onions, which were a combo of bbq sauce and hot sauce. Plenty of meat to fill the roll and not a skimpy portion at all. The nachos were amazing- I may never want them without a combo of bbq sauce and cheese sauce again. The menu said it should have mac and cheese on it, but we just had cheese and no noodles. Maybe a mixup? Either way also good and a repeat for sure. Potato salad is something I am incredibly picky about. Potatoes were soft and perfectly cooked. Seasoning spot on - the right amount of salt, a perfect addition of dill. Not too much mayo. And definitely no Miracle Whip (on the list of my least favorite flavors ever). Coleslaw was very good, just not my preference. This is of the traditional apple cider vinegar variety and I am more the KFC creamy chopped kinda girl. Still delicious and glad I tried it.
Many people were doing takeout today, but there are a few tables available. They didn't have drinks yet, but will have bottled Pepsi products soon. (There's a bunch of places to pick up a drink on the way in, which is what we did just in case).
The owner was fantastic to talk to. He mentioned they will be doing Thursday specials (possibly a Texas thing from what I gathered?) - this week a smoked burger, also a smoked Philly brisket sandwich in the future that I can't wait to try. Saturdays there will be much more variety - Beef Ribs, Smoked Turkey, and other specialty items in addition to the regular menu.
Prices very reasonable - we paid $38 for all 4 items. They also have their sauces and seasonings for...
Read moreFood was amazing! Love to see this style of BBQ in New York. The servings were huge and we had plenty to go around. We had the pit master platter and ordered some extra sides. All of the meat was perfectly cooked tender and had amazing smoked flavor - this is REAL deal BBQ. The cornbread and collard greens were probably the best i’ve ever had. The cornbread was a huge piece & we were served 2, as the Pit Master is an entre for 1-2 people (unlike some other bbq places that often give a small square of dry cornbread to split). The burnt ends and mac n cheese, were great as well. We sat down in the restaurant as we wanted to give our first experience the best opportunity for flavor and freshness- and it did not disappoint. The two gentlemen working there were quick to accommodate our party of 5 adults and 1 child, and allowed us to pull there 3 small tables together so that we can sit as a family. They were super friendly and even took the time to explain the history of Mark BBQ and how it came to be. Needless to say our experience and the food was so good that my husband stopped by the following afternoon to pick up a 1/2 rack of ribs to go. We will definitely be frequenting this establishment, and bringing friends. We are grateful to see new mom & pop businesses in Warrensburg, especially ones that embody the friendliness of this small town. We encourage anyone reading this review to...
Read moreNo experience with the actual food. Honestly it looks amazing and I am sure it is. This business, prior to opening, made posts boasting about how they are all about community. I now believe otherwise, and while many could have other opinions, I'm entitled to mine. I reached out a month ago to see if this business would be willing to donate anything to a neighboring town's Varsity football team's Homecoming dinner. Here's the thing, we often reach out and don't expect everything to be free, we as parents often contribute money to pull something together and our "go-to" who ALWAYS donates, we do sometimes have to pay something and that is okay. We don't mind. But...having run a business before myself, YOU always circle back when someone reaches out. Even if he responded that he couldn't, he would have been acknowledged the message. I would totally respect a "no" answer as it is a new business. The message was seen and no response. Again, totally okay. Also, totally okay that we will not spend money at his business. Also...word of mouth is everything when you are a business owner. Just think of the additional social media attention and business that would come when a team of 35 tells their families what awesome food they had. Most likely, those 35 families would become...
