The best Kerala based authentic restaurant that serves delicious dishes in the bay area - Period. Every time I go to Kovalam to eat food, it reminds me of eating food back in kerala. The malabar porrotta is slightly crispy and soft at the same time - goes well with the savory chicken curry, beef roast and side of chicken 65! I have had the Kallu-Appam with chicken stew - so delicious! Chicken 65 brings back fond memories from childhood! The goat biriyani is so flavorful - every bite is loaded with flavor! The fish biriyani is so mouth watering - I have honestly not had a fish biriyani this delicious. Phillip is the main Chef and founder at Kovalam. He is very welcoming and his service is very warm and amazing! Puts a smile on my face every time I deal with him/visit Kovalam! Our family enjoys the food so much that we always call Kovalam for catering services for all our events from birthdays, to prayer meetings, to house warming ceremonies, church gatherings, etc. Everyone who we serve this food catered by Kovalam is surprised by the authenticity of Philips food! The best thing about Kovalam is Phillip - His food’s taste, texture, and aroma are consistent since many years and he continues to serve the same great quality food even today! Kudos to Phillip and Kovalam team! You guys are really serving us food from Kerala that is very flavorful and brings back sweet memories from childhood! Really authentic taste! We mainly use Kovalam's catering services as the restaurant is a little distant from where we stay. All our experiences with the food ordered from here have been great. The usual items we order for our functions/gatherings are the biriyanis of which the Lamb Biriyani is a must have.
We recently ordered from Kovalam was for my daughter's birthday party. Their owner Philip is a very jovial guy and was very helpful with his inputs as we set up the menu. This time, we ended up ordering something different and went with ghee rice, beef and chicken peralan curries for a function of around 45 people. The food was delivered on time and special care was taken to ensure the freshness using food warmers. All the items were perfectly made, well spiced and there did not seem to be any compromise on the ingredients. The response to the food was overwhelmingly positive.
We definitely recommend Kovalam to anyone looking for authentic South Indian food. It is the go to place for catering orders for our community here in...
Read moreThis spot is nestled inside Kovalam Indian Groceries, cleverly set apart yet within the store. We opted for Masala Fried Chicken, Fish Fry, Goat Peralan served with Kerala Porotta and Idiyappam, and Chicken Biryani. While the Masala Fried Chicken was flavorful, it seemed to have artificial coloring added, which could be skipped. The Fish Fry was marinated and cooked to perfection. Trying the Goat Peralan was a delightful surprise; the masala was particularly tasty. Goat is partly chewy, it would have been better softer. The Kerala Porotta was a bit greasy. The Chicken Biryani, adorned with dry fruits and nuts, leaned towards a sweeter side, but the accompanying pickle was a highlight. Definitely don't miss the pickle—it's fantastic. Overall, the meal was delicious but a bit oily, with oil seeping onto our plates. It might be worth considering reducing the oil usage. It’s self service style, you order and pick it up and take to your table. Also, note that there aren’t high chairs for kids at...
