I was in Winona, MN for business, and whenever I travel, I search for food options different than those I experience at home. Most of that involves going to non-chain restaurants, and after a brief Google search the River Cafe came up as an intriguing option.
Its location was about 25 miles from my hotel, but the positive reviews prompted me to try it. I was seated immediately by the host, and he then came back for my drink order. I usually have cream and sugar with my coffee, and all he brought was a cup of coffee, 2 packets of sugar and 2 single serve half and half containers. That's really not an issue, other than the fact that he had to keep running back and forth for refills.
The menu isn't too extensive, but there's something for everybody. I opted for the 'Basic' breakfast, which consists of two eggs, choice of meat, potato and bread. When he asked how I wanted my eggs done, I said 'soft scrambled' and he had no idea what I wanted. Instead of going into what constitutes soft scramble versus regular scramble, which is only a few minutes less on a grill, I decided to go with another option. Again, not a big deal whatsoever.
I eventually chose over medium eggs, sausage links, hash browns and English muffin. They provided salt and pepper packets but didn't offer ketchup, hot sauce or anything like that. The salt and pepper did just fine, as I'm not too fussy. You get the true taste of the food without too many spices. Overall, the food was quite tasty and I will be back on my future visits to try...
Read moreIn the past River Cafe was a very good place to go but recently, it has gone down hill. They are no longer a dependable place to choose as they willy nilly change their hours and don't post them on their webpage. Hence, causing people to show up and be told they are closed. Not sure who is running the place now but service has dropped also. We used to frequent the restaurant but they have become undependable and I will now choose other places, who are more dependable and offer comparable food and services. It’s really a shame because I like to promote small business but dependability is a must and posting your hours of operation on your webpage should be considered, so that your potential customers don’t make wasted trips. Posting a closing sign on your door after you’ve closed doesn't notify your customers ahead of time. Everyone understands that things come up and emergencies can happen but be professional and make sure your customers know. So with that being said River Cafe has now lost my business, but apparently they don't need the business. This isn't a one time incident, it happens quite frequently. I’ve stopped on several occasions only to find the place closed down on days when they should be opened according to...
Read moreHad a waitress that was on her second day not know what to do. Came up to our table three times to try to take an order. Finally one of the older waitresses can you take our order. Then when we got our food I've been into my Denver omelette only to find that there was eggshell in it. My guess that was eating with me got the Wisconsin cheese steak omelette and the meat was so tough he could not chew. I finish my own meal and continued to go to the cash register to pay. When I was asked how it was I said it would could have been better. After explaining I was given a discount. In order to improve this restaurant may need to have a well experienced staff as not once did they ask to...
