El Potrillo — Restaurant in Trenton

Another of the growing cadre of very good Mexican restaurants in and around Trenton. This one, El Potrillo (The Colt) has taken over Marsilio's Kitchen on Roebling Avenue in the Burg. It is amazing how Mexican rugs thrown over tables change the look and mood of one of the classic Italian houses. One can only hope they can do something that is the Mexican equivalent of the great Chicken Cacciatore that its predecessor was known for.

The space is casual, but also clean and well organized. The bar is no longer servicing alcohol, but in its place are fresh squeezed fruit/vegetable juices. My large snifter of Carrot Juice was sweet and coolly refreshing. The menu is diverse and provides just enough English to hint at what you will get.

My Torta Carnitas (slow cooked pork) was huge and enough for 2 meals. The Roll was thin and nicely crunchy. There was plenty of meat at the bottom and it was the base for the Lettuce, Avocado, Onion, Jalapeno, Fresh Cheese, Tomato and Spicy Mayo that all came wrapped neatly in paper. I needed knife and fork to work my way through the half torta, taking the other piece home for another lunch.

The combination of fresh veggie juice ($4) and the torta ($8), may seem steep for this type of shop, but when you realize they are preparing two meals for you, the value proposition becomes outstanding.

El Portrillo asks if "You have tried the best Mexican food around?"

They are certainly entitled to their hyperbole, because it is among the best I have...

I had the best mole de olla, tacos and most of the food there I really enjoy and recommend it, the big problem is the waitress they always messed up the orders they have the worst waitress 😡 I always order mole de olla and Messed up with sopa de res, I order cemita Non-spicy and i call back to tell her same girl Answer me with really bad attitude is your fault “ we recorded the orders are you sure” i say yes I’m sure oh well I can’t do nothing. No sorry or try to fix it. they’re mean and nasty blaming you. I’m warning you Becareful!!! with the nasty waitress. I can say one thing about the owner(women) she’s always fixings the order she’s very understanding women, I love the food but I don’t think is worth it fighting with the nasty waitress while...

Worst service, we use to love el potrillo but no when you order for delivery they charge double fee because the address is 15 min away from the restaurant they charge extra without letting you know, also now food is terrible always something is missing and when you call to complain they don't care if they messed your order , and when they give you total of how much it is with delivery then you realize they charge $6 extra plus every time I call Order the same food every time I get charge a little more next time a little more, makes no sense, I think they are more of making money then the quality...
