If you're traveling north or south on the 99 highway, find yourself passing by Tulare and thinking "I'm so hungry I could eat like a bear" well, my friend be sure to stop by the Black Bear Diner where the portions are unusually large and trust me, you will eat like a bear and eat like that for a week or two if you take home leftovers because there will be leftovers.
Black Bear Diner was the last stop on my Thanksgiving trip home. Taking a cheese factory tour and romping through a vacant outlet center sure does make a girl hungry so we stopped here because I had been curious about this place. These diners only exist up north. While SoCal residents have their fair share of culinary delicacies to choose from, good old fashioned diners just don't fit the scene.
I love the decor here. Wooden bears and benches, murals with bears painted on the walls, stuffed bears in random seats, and also a gift shop if you want to take home a shirt bragging you attempted to eat like a bear. The menu is a newspaper and folds out to an abundance of options and if you're hungry everything will look good. Breakfast is served all day and dinner comes with a soup or salad and two sides not to mention that the main course is already pretty big and they add more on top of that!
We went with the lighter options menu but that still comes with the soup or salad. He got the veggie soup and I got the house salad. Our salad and soups were mini entrees and when our meal arrived we didn't quite know where to start. My stuffed chicken plate was a stuffed chicken with broccoli and cheese and topped with hollandaise sauce and on the side I got mashed potatoes with gravy, steamed veggies, and french bread. His meatloaf came with mashed potatoes, steamed veggies, and french bread. We got about half way through before we called it quits. And since we weren't locals and a good 3 hours away from home, we didn't box anything up even though our food was pretty good.
On the way out, we grabbed a bear claw for the road. Their bear claws are the size of a bear paw print and shaped like one as well. They're a great little treat and about $4. If I'm in the area again, I'll definitely have to...
Read moreI was in town on vacation on my way to the Sequoia. Was with my family so decided to go for lunch at Black Bear, when we got there we waited a while for someone to greet us, but no big deal I was on vacation so had time to spare. The place was far from being pack less than 8 people eating at the moment. The waitress told us where to seat, so we did.
The table had a bunch of little INSECTS under the condiments. Waited for the waitress to come back and informed her, she ignored that fact and asked what we wanted to drink. I was baffle so I went ahead and repeated myself. I mean, it wasn’t one or two, it was a bunch of INSECTS. Not sure if that is something to be expected in Tulare, I hope it’s not. I digress, we told the waitress we were not ready for our drink order, she didn’t offer for us to change tables or anything, she just walked away. So we decided to change tables ourselves because we were disgusted to eat on a table with INSECTS. Anyways, we saw her tell what I’m assuming was her supervisor, well the manager didn’t do anything about it either. She didn’t come to clean the table with the INSECTS or anything, kind of that’s not my job type of attitude.
Well we ended up leaving the restaurant because I mean if it’s that dirty out in the tables, I don’t even want to imagine the actual kitchen.
I usually don’t write reviews, but I took the time to write this to hopefully save someone else a bad moment like the one me and my family...
Read moreTerrible experience,me and my husband are regulars and always have a great experience with other servers, today we had Sarah she was argumentative and rude , I asked for a waffle breakfast, waffles just plain as she brought me my plate of food it had strawberries and whip cream on top I told her “sorry my waffle was plain “ she proceeded to tell me that I said I wanted strawberries and whip on top I said “sorry no” she proceeded to argue that I asked for it , so I simply said no . She took the plate back and brought the same waffle with the residue of strawberries and whip on it , I tried to only eat the edges because I am allergic to berries. My husband also asked her for some more syrup and she pointed to the one syrup and said “ there’s one here you still have one” , every time she brought something to the table she set it down aggressively or fast , at the end of the visit we waited for our tab and she was standing at the server register and talking and then both her and her coworkers just stared at our table . We’ve had many good servers and experiences here , but this time was...
