I tried Los Hernandez Tamals in Union Gap, Washington in May 2019. I originally tried to visit in September 2018, only to discover that the days of business had changed. For eight months, all I could think about were those tamales. Knowing this business won a James Beard award in January 2018, I couldn’t wait to try them. When I was able to finally visit, I ordered an Asparagus tamale and a Pork tamale to try on site, with the intention of ordering a larger quantity of one or both, to take with me. I couldn’t have been more disappointed. I’m not sure what the problem was with the masa,, but it was overly stiff and wet. Neither tamale had much flavor. Even with the house salsa added to it, there just wasn’t enough flavor to make we want to finish eating the tamales. I don’t know if my experience was a one off or not, but I haven’t been sufficiently motivated to return and give this business a second try.

I read about how this is such an amazing tamale place, along with the James Beard award, which made me want to stop in when I was doing work in Yakima for the week. I called ahead and asked about frozen tamales and was treated very well and the lady on the phone was helpful and nice. I got there and the service was very much the same. I ordered a dozen frozen chicken tamales to go and a couple chicken hot for there. The ones I had in person were just kind of average tamales. Nothing to make me amazed. I’m not sure if it was just an off day but they were a little on the dry side and not even fully hot, so I’m not sure if they had just sat and then were plated? They weren’t bad they just were ok. I’m excited to try the ones I picked up frozen. But kind of sad the fresh ones were kind of boring. Maybe if I had done the asparagus ones, that would have been a different story since they were hyped up.

I never saw a James Beard Award Foundation banner on the side of a restaurant before. Then again, I've never been to a James Beard Awarded restaurant. As it turns out, this would be my first experience in a restaurant with that award. I'm someone who loves Mexican food but is not a huge fan of tamales, but I will say that their tamales were pretty dope. Soft and flavorful with the right amount of ingredients that supposedly make tamales pretty freakin' awesome. A well constructed outer shell of what I believe is a cornmeal housing, with delicious interior and house salsas to boot! I never considered being wrapped up inside a corn concoction before, but that thought has crossed my mind since eating at Los Hernandez!

Dropped in again to get tamales this evening. These things are and have always been fantastic. This is a takeout in place first and foremost, so unless you're grabbing a quick lunch, don't expect to dine in.

Every tamale I've had is consistent, rich, and flavorful: never too greasy, never dry and crumbly... just good stuff. (They are deceptively filling, so beware of over-ordering. They are great left over though, so don't sweat it too much).

When they are in season, I highly recommend the asparagus and pepper jack tamales, which are a family favorite. We were all initially skeptical since we tend to prefer traditional (pork), but we got asparagus ones on a friendly recommendation and found that the tanginess of the asparagus, sweetness of the masa, and richness of the cheese come together beautifully.

I happened to meet the owner on my most recent visit, and it was a real treat to discover that his reputation as a kind and friendly person is accurate. If you see him, I suspect he'll have a friendly greeting for you too.

This place is a Yakima area gem that deserves its reputation. Absolutely take the time to try...

You will not find a better tamale on this planet than Los Hernandez. We drive 3.5 hours one way to get these tamales. They are very authentic and fresh. The pork tamales are spicy, but not so spicy hot to burn your mouth. They aren't dry either and they don't fall apart when you unwrap them. Even heated up later they are still excellent. We've been to both locations, but prefer the original since that's where I first had them. All the folks who work there are genuinely friendly and happy to see you. Tamales is all they make, so don't go in expecting tacos or burritos also. The asparagus tamales are amazing and this is coming from someone who does not like asparagus, but you can only get those during the asparagus harvest. The jalapeno and cheese are rad too, not crazy spicy but you taste the fresh jalapeno pepper. Make sure you get some to take home and eat later. You'll regret it if you don't. The seasonal tamales are amazing. Try one even if it's something you don't normally try. I had the cactus tamale today, wow it was rad. The lunch specials...

We purchased a dozen Tamales, half chicken and half pork. The lady at the counter was pleasant when taking our order and said we could do half and half. The sign stated a dozen tamales were 18 dollars and change. Upon looking at the receipt we noticed we were over charged at 21 dollars. When we talked to the gal at the counter she tried to say it's because we got half and half. My boyfriend explained that the menus stated you could get either for the dozen and that that was misleading and you also said we could split which kind. She finally gave us a refund of the difference but never apologized. As far as the food.... It was rather bland and the massa was under seasoned. The salsa vearda was fair but the red salsa was bland and lack luster. I was told by a friend how great the food was and was so excited to try them. After eating there I will save myself time and money by buying them at a grocery store in the freezer department, as they rate about the...
