We stopped here on our way home from SFO. The idea of a local, non-generic breakfast appealed to us, and the reviews seemed good. It was definitely authentic; I doubt the outside has seen an upgrade in 30 years, more likely 40. But who cares if the food is good? The inside was equally untouched over the last few decades, which was a treat for fans of 80's flicks like Outsiders, Star Wars, Breakfast Club, Back to Future, etc... posters on the walls. Also a nice TV with classic rock videos and covers, lots of Beatles tunes. It was pretty small, though... only 4 tables besides a long counter w/ stools. Not a huge menu either. But it had breakfast and lunch staples. We encountered somewhat slow service, which was explained by a burnt waffle that had to be redone. Joe's special, ground beef fried with onions, spinach and eggs was very good with generous portions of meat. Hash browns were great too, perfectly done with a crisp outside and soft inside. The only caveat was a local (I presume) talking about his old car and motorcycle with another patron. He didn't sound drunk, and thankfully he wasn't cussing, but he sure wasn't aware of how loud he was in that small room. Bad timing on our part I guess. It was just my husband and I, and after a 15-hour flight, we were too tired to upset the locals' apple cart. Not sure I'd stop in again... I'd probably opt for the larger selection at a chain next time, and management's attention to the dining experience of every patron. But I sure enjoyed...
Read moreA homey neighborhood establishment. I love to support local businesses. I was headed to a local tourist attraction and saw the homesome reviews for Maggie's. The atmosphere described is accurate. The cook was a one man show trying to do his best to prepare food for the entire (small) space. The food was okay. Inexpensive and done as quickly as possible with a single order cook. With that said, I would expect a long standing local establishment to prepare more of its food fresh. I saw frozen chicken used to prepare a chicken and waffles dish. The gravy my family enjoyed (it was tasty) with (doughy) biscuits and gravy and chicken fried steak was microwaved. The most upsetting bit was that none of the items we received from the omelet to the hash browns had not one dash of seasoning -- other than the frozen chicken. With that said, this was not the worst meal I've had. It was simply much lower than my expectations based on the longevity of the place and the...
