Ah, Pete's Breakfast House in Ventura—the epitome of morning indulgence and the guardian of breakfast bliss! In a world where the phrase "most important meal of the day" is thrown around too casually, Pete's restores honor to this age-old adage.
As you step in, the atmosphere greets you like the first rays of sunshine after a long night—warm, bright, and invigorating. The retro diner vibe pays homage to simpler times, enveloping you in a comforting sense of nostalgia that pairs perfectly with the menu.
And speaking of the menu, let's get to the culinary stars of my visit: scrambled eggs, biscuits & gravy, and crispy bacon. My friends, these scrambled eggs were not mere sustenance; they were the very essence of fluffiness and flavor—crafted with a finesse that whispers rather than shouts, allowing their simplicity to shine through.
The biscuits and gravy? Oh, what a comfort-laden marvel they were! The biscuits were as fluffy as a cloud, providing the perfect landing pad for the robust, creamy gravy that cloaked them. Each bite was a comforting embrace, a soulful "good morning" that reverberated through my entire being.
As for the bacon, let's just say it was the epitome of porcine perfection. Crispy yet tender, each strip was a tightrope walk of textures and flavors, offering that irresistible crunch without veering into the overcooked territory.
What brings this gastronomic symphony together is, of course, the service. Exceptional is an understatement. At Pete’s, you're not just a customer; you're a cherished guest in a home that takes immense pride in its breakfast craft.
In summary, Pete's Breakfast House is not just a place to eat; it's a rite of passage for anyone who claims to love breakfast. Forget the generic morning pit stops you're accustomed to. Make your way to this Ventura treasure, and experience a breakfast that will not only fill your stomach but also enrich your soul. Trust me, Pete's is not just a meal; it's an ode to the joy of starting...
Read moreOh Pete’s Breakfast House, I really wanted to love you, but you were just pretty OK.
The service was exceptional. Seriously, our waiter was always there, helpful, but not a too constant irritant. He knew how to keep us happy, without constantly bothering us. Second to none.
However, the food was a bit of a letdown.
We got the Blueberry Pancake Sandwich with scrambled eggs and bacon, a short stack of Buttermilk Pancakes, a side of Corned Beef Hash, a side of Biscuits and Gravy, Coffee and a Hot Chocolate.
Pancakes: solid, standard breakfast fare. No complaints there. They soak up syrup nicely. Bacon: a little soggy, not quite cooked to my crispy fondness. Scrambled eggs: not bad, a little dry, but certainly not bad. Corned beef hash: the highlight! Do yourself a favor and certainly get this. It’s worth the trip alone. Biscuits and Gravy: the biggest letdown. The gravy was desperately in need of seasoning: some salt, some pepper, some anything. It really was pretty sad. The biscuit, however, was great. We scrapped off the gravy and ate it with some of the jam on the table (which tasted suspiciously like Smuckers). Coffee: Alice told me it was good. Hot Chocolate: 100% from powder, and that’s 100% not a problem. I wouldn’t expect some fancy, froufrou hot chocolate from a breakfast place. This will make you happy, especially with whipped cream.
Overall, it’s not bad, but it’s also not great with the exception being the Corned Beef hash. If you go here, get that and...
Read moreGreat value compared to other breakfast places nearby, but the food has been unremarkable. I tried the pancake roll on my first visit, as it looked very delicious in picture posted by another reviewer. Sadly, looks can be deceiving as it didn't taste good at all. The yogurt created an overall sour taste. The berries weren't the ripest (which is not in their control) and the there wasn't much granola added. But I figured it was my fault for going with that option, so I was motivated to try something else next time, especially since my friends choices looked good, and the reviews have been great. So I brought some family with me on this occasion and I tried a south of the border option. It was fine, not much flavor but good value. My guests felt the same way about their choice of French toast and blueberry pancakes. Actually, the blueberry pancakes were a huge let down... Using condensed frozen blueberries (and charging $3 extra) is a move you would expect at a Denny's (sorry for throwing strays at you Denny's, no hard feelings.) Anyways, I think giving it two tries with multiple people was enough to effectively rule it out as a future breakfast option....
