Koba Sushi — Restaurant in Ventura

This place is a local treasure. I tried 3 sushi places in Ventura before going to Koba. Koba is my absolute favorite, without a close second. I now go weekly.

The rice is perfectly flavored and cooked. The fish is high quality and generously portioned. Nothing is smothered in sauce. I have not been to Japan, but imagine this is a genuine representation of an excellent sushi place.

I think it is affordable compared to other places, even though it is much better. I’d say even underpriced given the exceptional quality of the food and service.

The people are really friendly as well. It is a small place. I always eat at the sushi bar, but there are also a few tables. It feels more like dining at someone’s home.

I should have written this sooner, because they deserve your business and you deserve their service - but I was hesitant to give up a secret because then it might get too busy given it is a small place! haha

This isn’t a typical westernized sushi restaurant with fried rolls smothered in Spicy Mayo or Eel sauce, there are plenty of those nearby if that’s what you’re after. If you want to eat some fresh Nigiri as if you were strolling down an alley in Kyoto, Japan, this is the place for you. Toshi-San always gets the freshest fish and has the best Toro I have ever tasted in Ventura County. This place will make you feel as if you were in a small yet cozy Izakaya in Japan. You must give this place a try. The only downside is the hours and days of operation. It’s hard to get a seat but it’s so worth it! There’s not another sushi place I’d go to over having the privilege of eating at Koba...

I came here with high expectations. I have not had their sushi per say but I did try the rolls. The rolls were a major disappointment. While I was eating a roll and began to swallow some on the seaweed got half stuck down my throat while the other half remained in my mouth. I tried to swallow again and it still wouldn't go down. So I tried drinking water to help it go down. So I started to choke on it and had to force myself to barf just to get it out of my mouth. No one in the restaurant bothered to help except for my girlfriend. At the end of it all I didn't not receive an apology or nothing just a check and a thank...
