Jose Tequilas Mexican Grill and Bar — Restaurant in Virginia Beach

Unsure if the restaurant was under staffed, overwhelmed or just not in good shape when my girlfriend and I went for our anniversary.

We arrived for lunch before planning to head out to the beach for the rest of the day. After an almost 5 hour drive we were starving and ready to eat.

We ordered the crab+shrimp dip for our appetizers. The dip was just queso with shredded crab & pieces of full shrimp with a side of chips. The chips were completely stale, unsalted and cold. The waiter arrived 15 minutes after our appetizers arrived and asked what we ordered (almost 30 minutes after we had ordered the first time). Arroz Con Pollo, which was almost inedible. The chicken was cold, poorly seasoned and sopping wet. It was impossible to eat it with a fork. My girlfriend ordered the burrito bowl , which was also cold, poorly seasoned and had about a half inch of standing cold liquid.

We were still hungry & ended up leaving within 2 minutes of getting our food. We asked a waitress for our check, in which she very firmly just said “no” and walked away. By the time we got to the car she had gotten sick and we ended up not going to the beach. Not to mention for all of this it was $60. We ordered no drinks.

For this price you’d expect a decent meal & service for 2, instead of wishing you just got Taco...

My family and I visited Jose Tequilas twice during our summer vacation, and both visits were absolutely fantastic! Conveniently located right on the bottom floor of The Sanctuary condo building where we were staying, it couldn’t have been more perfect.

The restaurant has a lively atmosphere with light Mexican-themed décor, and despite being busy, the service was incredible. Our server was so attentive and thoughtful, making us feel genuinely welcome.

The food was outstanding—we had the cheese dip appetizer, split the fajitas for two (so flavorful!), and enjoyed the big margaritas, which were spot-on. Our kids loved the kids’ burritos, and on our second visit, the staff surprised us with complimentary desserts for the kids and specialty shots for my wife and me. It was such a kind gesture that made our visit even more special.

Great food, but can’t recommend based on disappointing experience settling the check. All three of us enjoyed our meals and beverages and were planning on a return visit until the problem we experienced in trying to settle our bill. The bill was to be split equally three ways - one person paid cash and the other two were paying by credit card - but when the charge slips were returned they were not split evenly and the person paying cash was told that they were $5 short. I saw the cash put in the folio with the cards and it was not short. The person put in another $5 - very graciously and with no argument - and the remaining amount was split incorrectly yet again. (And just to clarify - it was off by ~$15, not spare change.) After approximately 20 minutes we were finally able to settle up and leave. Again, the food was great but splitting a check equally three ways should not have been such an issue. A disappointing ending to an otherwise...
