Still a 2 to 2 and half 5. No toilet paper in the bathroom and still canned corned beef hash and too wet steak omelets keeps this rating in the same category. I wanted to like again, but not the case. Just a large breakfast bill. Do not think there will ever be a 3rd time. Older one. A 2 to 2 and half star rating is more appropriate but there are no half stars. This is a very fair assessment of them in their new status. I hope I am able to update them soon with a 4 or 5 star rating, but at this time this is not possible. I was stuck at 2 star area, but our waitress was awesome, sweet and overall great, as was the rest of the wait staff there so a 3 might have to do. But let's make it clear their food is around 2 in overall area and maybe lower in some areas. The food is lacking in some areas and thus needs to be addressed while in their "new status" !! I ordered their corn beef hash Benedict. The sauce was clumpy as if it was from a can, the hash was wet and luke warm/cold in the middle and the poached eggs were on the solid side (see pic). If you are going to make this be one of your 6 special plates...get this right. Homemade sauce or a great one. Cook the hash until it's fully cooked and give it some crunch on the outside. And lastly poach the eggs right. This is needed to give the whole Benedicts experience.... the runny egg yoke that's essential for the plate. And when you are going to do hash browns, which is AWESOME, make sure they are not all wet. My middle was actually wet. Not fried like great hash browns. Give them the crunch they need. Maybe I was there on an off day or it was later or something, but your so new you have to nail this stuff now. Because I want you to make it. I really do. I love breakfast places and we need a new, good one. It wasn't just my plate. Our pancakes (full stack) was flat not full, was spongy and had no plop of butter that YOU ALWAYS get on your pancakes. You were supposed to rub your own on. But the best part of the butter on pancakes is that it starts to melt from the kitchen making it spreadability perfect. This was just a spongy, flat stack with no body and no excitement. Your a breakfast place. You have to get pancakes right. These tasted more microwaved, or maybe even reheated. I am not saying they were please don't insinuate that. I am saying that's the taste they had. My daughter ordered a bacon plate and her toast was black and she had to scrape the burnt off with a knife. Again your too new to make these types of mistakes. On the plus side my daughters muffin was good and my other daughters wrap was a good value and she enjoyed it. Chalet I'm pulling for you. Get this stuff right and Ill come back. Until then, good luck...
Read moreLike many in the neighborhood, I was a HUGE fan of the Food Chalet. For years my family enjoyed their deli sandwiches, the little grocery section, and the friendly staff. So, when they closed, I was disappointed, but wanted to give the new place a fair shot. Today I stopped in for lunch.
The overwhelming impression I got was that the place should not have opened yet. It is simply not ready to handle customers. There were only a few customers, but my sandwich took quite awhile to make. I sat and waited and the whole place looked exactly like the mess left when someone moves out of a space. The old tile floors are there. The now-empty deli counter. The little brick nook that once held the breads. Even the strange little 'chalet' where the tables are. The new owners have thrown a few high tops (which I have never thought were comfortable.) At this point, they function as waiting stations for people who are... well... waiting for their sandwiches.
All this can be forgiven as simply an awkward transition if the food is good. I ordered a grilled chicken sandwich with spinach, feta, and calamata olives. It seemed like it would be hard to go wrong and the young lady at the counter assured me it was delicious. When I ate it, though, I was surprised at how little flavor it had. It was underseasoned and just bland. At $8.95, it was pretty pricey, too. My meal, with sandwich, chips, a small coffee and a can of seltzer was over $15.
All in all, my feeling is that the new owners of the Chalet have jumped the gun. They absolutely should have done the renovations prior to opening the doors. They still need to work on quality control for their food. The staff is friendly, but seemed a little unsure of what they were doing. It all just feels like they should have closed for a time to insure that the opening go smoothly, especially given how much loved the former place was.
Would I go again? Maybe in a month or so I will give them another try. In the meantime, Jersy Mike's on Warwick Avenue makes a mean roast...
Read moreIn the Warwick area, this place easily earns a 10 for breakfast menu variation and taste. I had the most amazing breakfast meat empanada with a side of spicy chili oil sauce that added an Asian-inspired kick. It was a unique and incredibly tasty breakfast item, deserving of a solid 10/10. While I typically shy away from very spicy food, the dip was so good that I enjoyed every morsel with dipping. Even without the dip, it was still outstanding.
Another item we ordered was the Braised Short Rib Benny, and just as I suspected, it was delicious. Being a fan of short ribs, I was not disappointed. The home fries were perfectly crisp and not dry, just to my liking. I tried some from my husband's plate, and he had to stop me from eating the whole serving (lol).
As a bonus, the place also showcases delectable cakes made from scratch by Johnny himself, the owner/chef. His mother, who occasionally helps with service, proudly shares this fact.
However, the service can be quite slow, and there is a surcharge for credit card payments. If you don't mind the wait for a server, refills, or the check, and are willing to pay with cash to avoid the 20+% credit card fee (although this information could be communicated more clearly), then you can fully enjoy the amazing breakfast offerings at Johnny's Chalet.
One thing to note is that there is no notice or sign about the credit card surcharge anywhere--neither on the menu, walls, nor as a table card. This lack of transparency can be a downside for those who value an overall good dining experience, where food is complemented by efficient service.
I recommend this place for breakfast and brunch enthusiasts looking to break away from the usual options. I'm yet to try their lunch menu, but it's on my list. Hopefully, by the time I return, they have addressed the visibility of their surcharge policy on the premises and the service...
