I drive by this place all the time, and I figured I would give them a shot. I ordered a large cheese pizza with extra cheese and half bacon, antipasto, and garlic bread with cheese. When I went to go pick up my order, there is no clear area to go to pick up food, so I went to the doorway between the restaurant and bar. A server was standing in the corner, so I said I was there to pick up, gave her my name, but for whatever reason, she didn't check on it. A different server I guess saw the interaction, asked my name again, and she got it wrong even though I told her twice. She came back out, I spelled my name, listed what I got, and the cook brought it out a few seconds later. I've been ordering pizza a long time, and this is the first place that has ever given me a pizza in a bag. I saw other people with pizza in boxes, so I'm not sure what the difference is. I pay for my food, drive a mile home, take the bag of pizza from my car to find it's soaked through with grease. The taste of the pizza was definitely nothing to write home about, and I ended up throwing it out after suffering through 4 slices. The dough had less flavor than the cardboard. Didn't even bother with the garlic bread. The antipasto was okay. You can't really mess that up. I really wanted to have this place be good. Unfortunately, I won't...
Read moreBefore going to Ro's especially for pizza you need to be in the mood specifically to go to Ro's for pizza. I'll explain; This isn't your normal New Haven style thin crust pizza. It's not thick like a Sicilian or Greek pizza. It's not simple like a cafeteria pizza on a Friday in school. (The best!)
You need to be in a mood for a doughy base, really, really thick in the cheese & all the crunch in the crust. It's been this way for years and remains the same. It's a destination pizza if this is what you want with a beer or 2.
Service was good, understaffed which isn't surprising in this day & age.
What bothered wasn't the dated plates that showed scratches & grime from oil with silverware to match... but the smell. Musty & moldy throughout the place as if it was 1985 and I just walked down from Griffen for an after school slice! It was so bad that I took the rest of my pizza to go just to leave.
With Daveley's gone (dumb move) Ro's is one of the last staples in the Water/Oak community. Hope minor things get addressed with...
Read moreI wouldn't go to Ro's once a week, but now and then when I want something hot cooked for me and delivered to me at the table it's great. The prices are reasonable and the food is not pretentious, if you want a dinner that is what it says like an Italian combo served hot this is the place, if you are looking for Virginia ham, Imported Genoa Salami, and aged provolone served on a ciabatta roll with roman lettuce, pimento, and bell peppers heated in their own pizza oven, that is what you will get but that is not what the menu will say. The inside has been updated over the years but still retains that comfortable stepping back in time feeling it's like this is what restaurants were like when I was young but it doesn't feel dated. If your in for a drink they do not have a wide selection, but they do have a great bar and you will be able to get something wet there. Overall if you want to eat because you are hungry and you want something between fast food and fine dining this...
