I've visited the Red Apple several times during the past 20+ years. It's never been any better than a 2 - 2.5 star diner at its best, but the convenience of a 24 hour restaurant was alluring enough that I kept going. After tonight, though, I will never go there again.
In the past, I've dealt with surly servers, incorrect bills and so much heat blasting from the vents that it made me feel nauseated. This evening, I attempted to dine there again with another person, but the rude owner decided to start a debate with me over a bottle of water.
I would never bring soda or food into a restaurant because that could hurt their bottom line. I only drink water, though. Therefore, bringing in my own water actually saves the restaurant money. This is something I've done for years (including in the Red Apple many times) without anyone ever caring. When we walked in today, a man said to me, "You can't bring that in. There's no food or water allowed." I responded with, "I'm sure they won't care," to which he said, "I'm the owner, and I care."
First off, it was only water. Second, he didn't attempt to say any of this in a polite manner. Third, this particular bottle of water had electrolytes added into it, which is something I have to have right now due to a medical condition. When I said something about the electrolytes, he didn't care. Instead, he told me, "if I let you bring it in, they'll bring stuff in." I'm not even sure who he meant considering the fact that the restaurant was almost empty and no one else was in the section we had chosen.
In a nutshell, he turned away paying customers who usually have a bill of around $20 to $25 and who always tip well over a bottle of water that was going to save him money and was necessary for a medical issue. Additionally, he wasn't friendly, polite or conciliatory about any of this. It is understandable for him not to want soda or food brought into his establishment, but his willingness to lose customers over a bottle of water that was going to save him money is completely nonsensical. If he had at least been polite about this situation, I would have understood a little better, but that wasn't the case. I'll be going to the 24 hour Leo's Coney Island from now, which is a lot closer to my...
Read moreI was just here and the manager came up to me in a very threatening manner demanding papers on my service dog, I tried to explain that the ADA does not require me to have “papers “ proving it’s a service dog but he got more verbally combative. Sad thing is as I told him I was only coming in for a moment to let the staff know my father had passed away on Friday because he was a regular for over 20 years!
Oh and. “ Rules for Your Service Animal If the tasks your animal performs for you are not obvious, the public accommodation may ask you only whether the animal is a service animal, and what tasks it does for you. The facility may not ask about or require documentation of your disability, require documentation of your animal’s status or training, or require your animal to demonstrate its work. Your service animal may be asked to leave if it isn’t housebroken or it is out of control and you are not controlling it effectively. If this happens, you are still entitled to use the accommodation without your service animal. You may not be asked to remove your animal because others are allergic to or afraid of the animal. Your service animal must under your control and wearing a harness, leash or other tether (unless that would interfere with the animal’s ability to do its job). You may not be isolated from other customers, treated differently, or charged a fee because you use a service animal.” Right from...
Read moreI moved to the area in feb and have been going to this establishment at least once or twice every other week. Their food is generally pretty good as its all home made. About a month back, I discovered I liked corned beef sandwiches. First time it was really good, but thousand island sauce was left out of my pick up. I didnt call to complain. Second time, there was tiny hairs all over the bread. I didnt call and complain. Now, I placed and order for my s/o and I. He wanted a rueben, I wanted a regular corned beef sandwich, NO Sauerkraut!!! I made that very clear. Once home my s/o ate his sandwich while I was in the shower, and once I was out (5 min later) my sandwich ALSO had sauerkraut on it drenched. I called, where I was passed to the manager. I let him know it was made incorrectly. He put me on hold, cane back and said the cooks said it wasnt put on one of the sandwiches. So I say “im looking at it right now and there foresure is, do you want me to bring it back so you can see!?” And he responded “WELL BOTH COOKS SAID THEY DIDNT SO”. So i said “okay, thats a great way to lose a customer” and then I hung up. They wonder why its hard to stay staffed.. well maybe because you cant even retain a customer base!!! I cant believe they even said that, and didnt say sorry ONCE! I hope the owner see this. Incident was with a male, on oct. 8th...
