Ella Coffee — Restaurant in West University Place

I visited Ella Coffee earlier today with a friend. I ordered the Lizzie Tiramisu and a croissant. My friend ordered the iced caramel macchiato.

I was so excited for my drink because the pictures of it posted were stunning! Unfortunately, the Lizzie Tiramisu did NOT taste anything like tiramisu, despite being topped with cocoa powder & ladyfinger. I could not even taste a tiramisu flavor or the espresso & I actually ordered an extra shot in my drink. I only tasted oat milk. That's it. No tiramisu flavor. I was so heavily disappointed in the drink that I decided to talk to the barista.

After explaining that I could not taste any tiramisu or even espresso, she told me that I could ask for me syrup if I prefer a sweeter drink. That wasn't the issue. The issue was I ordered a drink advertised to taste like tiramisu, but it just tasted of the milk that was used for the drink base. I explained further & she just offered to add more syrup to my drink.

It's kinda frustrating to buy a drink ($8 at that) & for it to taste like none of the flavor profile or notes it claims to have. It would be like ordering a peppermint mocha & not being able to detect peppermint at all.

My friend really enjoyed his iced caramel macchiato, so I decided to order one for myself since I did not care for the Lizzie Tiramisu. The iced caramel macchiato was decent & I liked the butter croissant. I'm unsure if I would go back simply because I don't feel like my original drink was made properly or that I was actually heard by the barista.

My partner Brian and I first discovered Ella Coffee during a really difficult chapter of our lives. After a two-month hospital stay, my friend surprised me with a “Lizzie” from Ella Coffee on the very day I was discharged. That coffee — topped with a delicate ladyfinger cookie and a dusting of cocoa — brightened my drab hospital room and felt like a little beacon of freedom and joy. It was such a treat I never would have ordered for myself, and it’s a memory I’ll never forget.

Since then, Ella Coffee became our weekly ritual. After lab draws or stressful days, we’d stop in for their seasonal drinks or just to soak in the cozy, curated atmosphere. The staff (I believe the owner or manager) even surprised us by remembering our names. Once, when I asked for the Lizzie without the cookie topper, she looked horrified and asked, “But will Brian eat it?!” before tucking it into a bag for him. From then on, we joked about her being Brian’s Italian girlfriend — the kind of personal, lighthearted connection you don’t find everywhere.

My cousin and I visited Ella Coffee yesterday(Sunday) and it was a really great experience. She got the viral tiramisu latte, I chose the Hibiscus, Rose, and Pistachio latte, and together we ordered a cheese board. I really liked both drinks, but she ended up liking the HRP latte better. The cheese was also yummy.

The only things I believe could be improved was the bread, it was extremely chewy and I had to take a break from eating it because my jaw was hurting and maybe they could add more fruit to the cheese board or a spicy jam.

The atmosphere is a total vibe and so cozy. The staff is very welcoming, helpful, and friendly. They also have a huge variety of packaged goods. Special thanks and shoutout to Victoria, who was our cashier, for helping us with what was halal and being so kind and genuine.
