TL;DR - a delicious find in an awkward* spot. They also offer catering (delivered meals for groups and events); the event we had catered went well and people really liked the food.
We happened across the Phinix in the first few days after they opened. It was going through some startup pains (it took 4 visits to get a lamb gyro - and it was worth the wait); the food we got was delicious, occasionally new-to-us and reasonably-priced.
On our first trip, we struck up a conversation with the co-owner Sam, and have spoken with him on-and-off over many trips to Phinix. He actively seeks out feedback and has been changing the menu quite a bit over the last year.
We have been to brunch, lunch and breakfast, and recently had them cater a large family event for us. The food has always been good, and most of it very good; we have gotten a couple of things that were not to our taste, but I suspect this is more about being unfamiliar.
The catering service was great. We had falefel, lamb kebab, chicken kebab, a couple of salads, veggie dolma and a fruit salad (we provided the drinks and more desserts separately). Phinix scoped out the venue a few weeks beforehand, provided all necessary chafing dishes, serving utensils, and actually served on the buffet line - which we did not expect. They cleared dishes, cleaned up and it went very smoothly. There were many positive comments, and the only misfire was that there were hot peppers in the garden salad; most people just avoided them if they didn't want spicy. (lesson learned for us: get a full sample meal of everything well before the event).
The restaurant itself is small - about ten 2- or 4-tops in the front, and a back room that seats maybe 20 or so; they seem to do a brisk take-out and delivery business. The tables are comfortable and the place is well-kept.
Service at the restaurant has generally been good, though we have had to remind our servers to brings certain things on a few occasions (for example, on our last trip, the garlic sauce was not brought with my entree, but I noticed and it was provided promptly).
The acid test is that every time I suggest Phinix, the only question is whether we have enough time to go out.
*It is only awkward if you are driving. The parking at Phinix is on-street, limited and mostly at meters. Summer daytime parking in good weather is stupidly hard because of the large, popular sprinkler park next door, so we mostly go during off-hours. It is about 2 blocks from the end of the...
Read moreAs a big lover of healthy and high quality food I can undoubtedly say that this is absolutely one of the best restaurants I have ever tried in my life. I am a very picky eater and I am usually very attentive with the food I eat, especially when I donât cook it by myself. Anyway, the food in Phinix managed to conquer my heart or my stomach to be more precise. One of the most important thing is that they use the freshest food, it is not frozen. As a person who was brought up in Italy, I am able to distinguish fresh food from frozen one, and I was absolutely convinced that the quality of food is really high. Weâve been to Phinix two times: one for dinner and the second one for brunch. I highly recommend everyone to try their shish-kebab, which will be an excellent choice if you are a meat-lover. For vegetarians they have amazing salads, I tried Greek salad and I was pleasantly surprised that it was absolutely the same I tried in Greece a couple of years ago. No matter, if you are a vegetarian or not, you will for sure find something suitable for your culinary taste. It will not make any sense if I continue to describe how good the food is, how awesome their Adjarooli is, which is just melting in the mouth. You simply have to try it. If you live somewhere in this area or pass by, give a try to this nice place, it is worth it. One more positive point is the ambience. It is not luxurious, but it very cozy and what is more important you feel like home there. There is some special atmosphere in this place: when you stay there, you donât want to rush or go away, you just want to enjoy your time. As far as the music is concerned, it is perfect for having a nice evening out. You can hear it, but at the same time it doesnât disturb you, so you can have a good conversation with your friends. The staff do their best to help, they give you detailed information about all the dishes you are interested in. They are very polite and kind, and they make you stay most welcome. One more positive point is that the prices are moderate. Honestly speaking I was expecting this restaurant to be much more expensive. To sum it up: 1) excellent food, 2) excellent ambience, 3) excellent music, 4) excellent staff plus 5) excellent prices and I give five stars to âPhinixâ. If you get a chance, give a try to this place, I assure you...
Read moreI visited Phinix for brunch when they first opened. Before I got a chance to place my order, I saw a dish go by for another guest. I asked and found out that it was the Phinix Adjarooli. It looked really good, so I ordered it.
While waiting, we got one of Phinix's specialty teas. The specialty tea is served in a french press, which I really like, and the tea itself was excellent. The tea we got was reddish in color, but I don't remember the name.
The Adjarooli is served with very lightly cooked eggs. Some people may think this is undercooked for their taste, so if you order this dish (and you should!) and you are particular about your eggs, make sure to specify. Otherwise, let the chef do his thing, because he knows what he's doing. This dish was excellent! It's a cheese puff pastry with lightly cooked eggs on top accented with tomatoes, peppers, feta, and cilantro with home fries on the sides. There is nothing I would change about this dish. The home fries were crispy and flavorful. The Adjarooli itself was amazing, soft and delicious with the feta and a perfect crunchy accent with the orange peppers.
My friend ordered the Pomodoro Eggs, which was also excellent. This is scrambled eggs with tomatoes, topped with cilantro. Again, the home fries were top notch. These are not the soggy mess you usually get at breakfast places. They are actually crispy/crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside, and well seasoned.
I haven't been able to get back to try their lunch or dinner menus, but the second I get the...
