I have mixed feelings about this place. On one hand, the majority of their food is delicious. On the other - the service and overall experience was lacking.
We visited Toby's Sunday evening. Another table was occupied the same time we arrived, so there were only 2 occupied tables in the restaurant. When we started the order, we were told that several positions we wanted are absent (all desserts and one of their drinks) - ok, that happens. So we ordered 4 juices and asked for some time to select the food, which was our mistake. Juices arrived after 25 minutes of waiting and there were only 3 of them, they forgot about the fourth. They have taken the food order at the same time, so we received our food after a total of 55 minutes wait. The other table was served much quicker, so my guess is that the place is understaffed.
Regarding the food, almost all of it was amazing. We ordered Tallarin Saltado (pasta) with shrimp and Trio Marino (seafood/ceviche/fried seafood combo). The former was amazing, the latter one was good (especially ceviche), but fried part was overfried to the point that seafood taste was lost. The juices were probably squeezed on the spot and were tasty.
All in all, if you're not in a rush or order the food by calling them - this is a good place to visit just to try their food. But we did not enjoy our visit that much simply because of the wait times. Your...
Read moreThe food was definitely authentic. This is apparently the sister restaurant to Toby's in Bantam Lake. That location has been there for several years and has a liquor license. This location has only been here for about 6 months, has no liquor license, and unfortunately, has no atmosphere. However, the food is excellent. We had fried cassava with a cheese sauce as an appetizer, and it was very tasty. My husband had the Trio Marino which was cerviche, fried calamari, and shrimps with Peruvian rice. The cerviche was right on, the fried calamari was very crispy, but the calamari inside was hard to find. The shrimp with Peruvian rice was very tasty. I had the seafood soup. The broth was very rich, and there was a lot of seafood in it. Both dishes were ample in size. If you go home hungry, it's your own fault. We did not get dessert because we were full. I recommend this place, and we will return so we can try other things on the...
Read moreWe stopped into this place when we drove by and saw Peruvian food. We couldn't believe that they had a Peruvian restaurant in Winsted. The dishes that my wife and I had were quite delicious and definitely made the stop worthwhile. However, the atmosphere of the place is very cold, and so is the temperature! Further, there's no hint of anything Peruvian. It's a very sterile inside and appears to have been decorated with whatever they had on hand at the time. I'm sure it costs a ton to open up a restaurant, but a little bit of effort making the inside more Peruvian and more inviting would probably garner a few more guests. It would be a shame if the place closed before they could make a few changes to increase their business because the food is well worth the trip. It's authentic and...
