It's taken a while to get to Slappy's since it opened but we finally made it yesterday. Family was visiting from California and I, being a Nashville native, was stoked to try the "closest thing to Nashville hot chicken". We walked in to a handful of blokes leaning and texting. No big deal as they had absolutely no customers. I order the white quarter with two sides. I am one that, just like most everyone, takes the sides as seriously as the "main". With limited options I chose their Cheezit Mac and cheese and baked beans. We all sat down after ordering and within 4 minutes our meals made it to the table. To be honest, this should have been the first indicator of quality and effort. The chicken was twangy with little spice and clearly had been prepped to sit and wait until whoever showed up. The sides were as pleasing as they looked (like slop). Imagine being super stoned and you have a box of blue box blue and a bag of cheezitz. As these are your only options with not a spice In sight you settle for the inevitable . You can put the rest together. As for the beans, it's clear that bushes has never given their secret up but it's obvious who is Slappy's favorite brand. As we leave the very vacant dining facility I'm realizing the place probably hasn't had a solid clean since these dudes with a dream were left unsupervised. To conclude this first impression view I would also like to add that we all got terrible stomach aches that kept us up all.night.long. I had the pleasure of puking until the sun up which is precisely what compelled me to write...
Read moreWe got take-out on the LAST Friday they were open before closing for their remodel to celebrate my hubby's birthday lunch at home. It was a horribly rainy day, but calling in to make this order, I was welcomed with the sunniest, warm service. I told him that it was my hubby's birthday and I was ordering Slappy's for him to enjoy for the very first time ever. They entertained me as I relished how I'd had their food many times and was excited to see what my hubby would think of the chicken. They thought it was adorable, but also a funny coincidence because it was the last full day they planned to be open so we got in just in time - like it was destiny. Anyways, they let me know that I could order the family meal which consisted of a whole dipped chicken, two sides, and rolls wrapped separately from everything else to avoid getting soggy, for $25. What a great value! Due to the distance from my house, they suggested I put the sauce on the side so that it didn't get soggy from the heat and time it'd have to travel for us to really enjoy it. I'm glad we did that. The chicken stayed very crispy and we just dipped every bite in the sauce they packed for us. My hubby was pleasantly surprised by the sauce's unique spice and flavor while the sides were also superb. The mac and cheese was baked nicely and the potato salad had generous sprinkles of bacon bits in it. Definitely the best helpings for comparable BBQ joints I've had elsewhere in the area. When it opens back up, my hubby's excited to try the chicken fully...
Read moreI was really excited to try Slappy's because I've heard so many great things and I think overall, it's decent, but I would say the flavor just did not live up to the hype. I wish I could give it 3.5 stars! I came on Friday at 3pm so it was not busy at all. This is a no frills, small shop with two seating areas and basic decor/design. It's next to Monstercade and Easy Tiger which I still hope to try soon!
It's nice to visit someplace that's known for one thing and has a limited menu - no choice overload/paralysis here. I went with the quarter chicken with mac and cheese and collard greens. Service was very fast/standard, I had barely sat down at the table and my tray had come out. I opted for the sauce on the side, and I think that might have been my mistake because the fried chicken itself was not super flavorful. It was honestly a little dry too, but the sauce was really tasty so I just dipped every bite into it. I did enjoy the collard greens- I wouldn't normally order those but read great things about them so decided to give them a try. The mac and cheese was okay, definitely thick and cheesy but a little lacking in flavor and could have been a bit warmer too.
Value wise, it's pretty good. About $15 after tax/tip for a filling meal. I think I'd give it another chance, would definitely get the chicken dipped and would try a side...
