We were out wandering around Orlando and did some shopping not too far from here. I was just looking for someplace that sounded good in the area and saw that I had marked this place to try at some point. We were just 4 miles away so why not. The first impression as we approached was that it looked interesting and parking was more like a city than I have gotten used to. There were a few vehicles parked and it was about 1:30 in the afternoon, which made it a late lunch for us, and not too busy. We wandered in the first door we found that said enter and found ourselves in a smallish area with menus and room for a few people. We picked up a menu and started reading. The young woman at the counter said we could step up so we did. The first thing to note is that she was wearing a mask and there is a plastic divider set up by the register. You can see back into the kitchen area which is fairly large and was busy.
We took a few minutes to talk to her about the menu and she was very knowledgeable and helpful. I asked what was good and she first let us know a couple things they were out of. She then told me her favorite item was the Costra de Asada which has steak, cheese, onion, cilantro and avocado on a flour tortilla. This sounded pretty good to me.
My companion got 2 of the Campechano tacos and I got 1 of the Costra de Asada minus avocado, (not a fan) and 1 Chori-Pollo taco minus avocado salsa, plus we got an order of Papas Aplastadas to share.
My companion was very happy with their choice and especially that the tortillas did not fall apart like so many others do. Being as they really stuff the tacos some did fall out but none of it went to waste. For me I tried the steak and onion first as it is the closest sounding to a Chicago street taco and was so well recommended. I tried a small piece of the steak first and I was hooked. This was some of the best seasoned and prepared steak I have ever had. In the taco with everything else plus some hot sauce it was the best taco I have had in a very long time. My companion tried a taste and we agreed we could eat an entire cow prepared like this, My second taco while not as mind blowing had some really good flavors. I am a big fan of chorizo and theirs is delicious. The whole mixture worked well together with just the right amount of heat. Lastly we had the Papas which are a fairly simple dish being boiled potatoes that are flattened and fried and seasoned with salt with sour cream that I asked for on the side. They tasted great and worked as an excellent pallet cleanser between tacos.
The dining area is not large but tables are well spaced with a self serve soda machine with quality real sugar sodas. We opted for their homemade Hibiscus tea which I thoroughly enjoyed.
We were told that they make everything fresh and when you try the food you can tell that they use quality fresh ingredients and put a lot of love into their food. This place may not be convenient for us but they will be on my list when we visit the area again. A great meal from...
Read moreThis was great. This was really, really great. My girlfriend and I were in Winter Park one evening, and we needed to find a place to eat. I pull out my Yelp bookmarks, and this place popped up and caught my attention, so we come here. The building is super chill. There's an indoor ordering place and outdoor only seating, and there is artwork and murals covering everything. So we get in there and the lady asks us if we've ever been there before. We say no and she tells us that their shtick is that they are a la carte authentic Mexican street food. I'm excited. There aren't a lot of places where you can find the real stuff.
So we decide to order a side item and two tacos to split between the two of us. We order the Esquites (Corn off the cob, bone marrow broth reduction, epazote, queso cotija, lime), and the Brisket (Seared brisket, onion, cilantro, avocado-tomatillo salsa, lime) and Chori-Pollo (Chorizo, shredded chicken, onion, cilantro, avocado-tomatillo salsa, lime) Tacos.
The esquites was mind-blowingly good. The corn is definitely off the cob. There were pieces of the cob floating around in there, which is fine. It's street food. The broth reduction was just so full of that scrumptiousness that you can only get out of bone marrow. You know what I mean. If you don't know what I mean, you gotta try this to find out. Please.
The tacos were on four-inch tortillas or so, double stacked, and the toppings piled on top. The brisket wasn't the most tender stuff in the world, but the toppings and the cook on the tortilla made up for all of that. It was a very good taco. The chori-pollo was also great. The chorizo was nice and chorizo-y, and the chicken wasn't too dry. That avocado-tomatillo salsa that was on all of this was like a delicious glue that put the meal together.
Then, we wanted dessert, so we ordered the Xocoflan (Layer of chocolate cake topped with a layer of flan de queso). It was a rich, dense, chocolate cake topped with a flan that was on the firmer side. I don't like loose flans. The majority of the sweetness actually came from the flan on top. The cake wasn't too sweet but still tasted like yummy chocolate. I recommend.
Overall, this was a great little meal at a great little price. I do plan on coming back, because my one regret was going for the standard and not springing for the El Mananero Taco (Seared brisket, chorizo, refried beans, scrambled egg, Chihuahua cheese, avocado-tomatillo salsa, lime). I'll be back for you,...
