Let me start with the good! The food is hot, fresh and very flavorful. I’ll be back for that. Let’s start with my experience on a Friday night. This is a small restaurant to say the least. Clearly a hot spot on a Friday evening at 6:30 pm. With only 7 inside tables and 2 outdoor tables, and 5 place sittings at the bar. On this Friday night they couldn’t hold the volume and demand of popularity they appeared to have. We waited for 25 minutes and hadn’t seen any food come out of the kitchen. With a full house that’s not a good sign. We did see patrons leave noticing how full it was. We ordered an appetizer of fried pickles and hadn’t received anything. Although the cashiers were hustling about, being this was our first visit we stayed to get to taste the food! At about 30 mins we finally saw food leave the kitchen; encouraging but there were 3 tables prior to ours still without food. Lots of drinks were being made at the bar, but not much food from the kitchen. When my husbands food did arrive, 40 mins in, it smelled wonderful. I will say the cornbread is dense but spongy and flavorful at the same time. I’ll come back for the corn bread and for the flavors in the food. At 51 mins I got my chicken sandwich. Mine and my husbands food didn’t arrive at the same time. Although everything tasted wonderful. As did the fries and fried pickles. Small critique patrons need a place to get their own napkins, refills, and to take their own trash. It would help the restaurant if patrons cleared their own tables. From baskets served and trash that way others have open tables to eat. Tables could cleared faster especially given the small number of them. I felt rushed to eat, to allow others to have space to sit. I couldn’t enjoy the atmosphere much. Perhaps we’ll come back during a slower time. Get the food to go, that’s going to be your best experience as I’ve witnessed so far.

Update 03.24.24 below at the end. May I ask? If this was helpful please like this review. Update 12.07.24 Pic added Went again for Crawfish,Fired Catfish, and. Red beans and rice. Delicious A must try. My family (with 2 kids) went on a Saturday during lunch. It was a little busy however the food still came out HOT and fast. The staff was very friendly and took their time to explain everything since it was our first time. The fried okra was fresh. The Dirty rice was delicious especially if you like it "DIRTY" lots of flavor! The red beans and rice were great. In the future I'd order it w Dirty rice instead of white rice. Chicken wings are superb plain "original" flavor lightly battered wings. Other customers all had the boudin balls that looked Great and the fried catfish looked great. (lots of food envy) My wife being from Louisiana loved it. We look forward to coming again. *Update: We still visit quite often l. We really enjoyed the Boudin and Jambalaya Balls. The Jambalaya Balls are new to me. So much flavor, it almost tastes like they use some kind of smoked meat in there. Also, very limited while it's in season is the whole boiled Crawfish. 10/10. True Louisiana Style. Perfectly soaked, juicy, with the perfect spice level.

I first heard about The South a few years ago at the Taste of Wylie before they even opened their doors. The owner was there with samples and they were delicious. We finally made it over there last night and I am so glad we did! I absolutely love Cajun food, but sometimes when people try to attempt Cajun food they just dump a bunch of hot/pepper spices in it because in their minds RIDICULOUSLY HOT = Cajun I am so glad to say this was not the case at The South. Upon entering, the atmosphere is welcoming and homey- it felt like the perfect little neighborhood restaurant. I ordered the Crawfish Etouffee and my husband ordered the Dirty South. Both dishes were rich in flavor, excellent portion sizes, and absolutely delicious. While we were waiting the owner brought us a sample of the Jambalaya Balls- a great way to start off and we will definitely order those in the future. The sauce it came with was the perfect compliment to the flavors in the ball itself. Our waitress was attentive and friendly, we will absolutely be back again! What a gem right here in Wylie! šŸš 🦐

Let me start with the good! The food is hot, fresh and very flavorful. I’ll be back for that.

One word. WOW! I am from East Texas and not too terribly far from the Louisiana state line. When we moved to the DFW area, the Cajun food scene has been lacking to say the least. The South is an absolute breath of fresh air. I was in absolute heaven. šŸ’Æ We started with the etoufee meat pie... my kids hesitated trying it (they are the pickiest eaters) and they ended up fighting over it! You definitely have to try it. My daughter and I split the Fat Cajun Fried combo with catfish, shrimp, hushpuppies, and fries. It was delectable in EVERY single bite. The fish was seasoned to creole perfection. The filets weren't too thick and not too thin and hand breaded with a great balance of cornmeal and flour. They were crispy, light and darn near made me slap the back of my head with my tongue! The shrimp were, much to my surprise, hand breaded and fried. They were just a touch over cooked, but the flavor made up for it and then some!!! The french fries were seasoned and breaded to the perfect crispness. My children generally do not like french fries (weird, I know), but they were literally fighting over them. My son, although he ordered a bowl (which is a massive serving) of red beans and rice, was begging to share the fish, shrimp, and french fries. The red beans and rice... and culinary staple in our home growing up... the bar is set HIGH. They knocked it SO far out of the park. I was happy to share my fish and shrimp with my son because he let me share his beans and rice. The potlicker those beans was so rice, thick, creamy, and hearty. They were seasoned on point. This was hands down the best Cajun food we have had since moving here almost 8 years ago. We LOVED it and will be back again...
