If you're looking for a good deli & bakery along rt. #1, in Yarmouth, Maine . . . Clayton's is the place! I would rate this place a 4.5 out of 5 !
I like fresh sandwiches made to order! I actually enjoyed an oven roasted turkey sandwich with homemade cheeseburger soup . . . Monday! Then went back for a roastbeef and cheddar cheese sandwich with a homemade taco soup on Friday! Excellent sandwiches, I loved the homemade hearty soups! There seemed to be a written chalk board with 10 different sandwich combinations, and 4 homemade soups. You add a soda and chips for about $11 to 16, depending if you want a half of sandwich or soup ( cup or bowl for a little more).
The sitting available is somewhat limited to 16 people , mostly tables for 2 & 4 people. During the summer, there's outside tables and chairs. We tried twice to get in during the summer, was packed! Located in a small mall area with reasonable parking available, except in the summer months.
Clayton's offers a small bakery area, with about 12 to 15 delicious looking desserts. I bought a big whoopie pie home for my wife. She rates all the whoopie pies across New England, so her opinion is forth coming. . . There's also a coffee area with 5 or 6 different styles of freshly made coffee. There are also a small selection of homemade in house salads ( potato salad, or egg salad, or chicken salad, a few veggie dishes, etc). Then you have a reasonable selection of wines for sale, by the bottle. I don't think they allow alcohol to be consumed on the property, and finally big jars of candy for sale, sold by the pound.
Seems like the owners are trying to operate a restaurant, deli, coffee & bakery cafe all at once . . ....
Read moreI stopped here for lunch on a Friday at noon. I saw on their menu a Thai chicken satay sandwich, which I ordered. The sandwich was $12, without any chips or any other side dish. It was toasted bread but when I was handed the sandwich, nothing on it was warm. The chicken was a thin piece of chicken breast, as DRY as could be. There was one piece of tomato on each half of the sandwich, and some reddish colored, which tasted like bottled, somewhat peanuty type sauce. When they handed me the sandwich, I expected it to be a little bit warm but it was cold through and through. The bread was hard because it was toasted, and the sandwich was completely unremarkable. But the worst part, was that I ordered a lemon bar, which was $6, and couldn't help but nibble on it when I was waiting for my sandwich, which took 20 minutes. As I ate, I had to spit out the lemon bar, because there were pieces of METAL in the lemon bar! I actually brought the lemon bar back to the counter and showed it to them and they asked me if I wanted another one (really!?) but I asked for a refund. I even showed them the metal inside the lemon bar, small strips of silver metal, which I could definitely feel in my mouth. I'm just hoping I didn't ingest some of them and hope to not have a problem later today! I've tried to Clayton's a handful of times, and each time I've been underwhelmed and very disappointed. There are so many other good places nearby, I would never chance going here again! Cold sandwiches and metal strips inside my dessert is not my idea of a...
Read moreI didn’t even check the star for food! We went on Friday to get coffee and a pastry/ BIG MISTAKE!! Coffee urns were either cold or 1/4 full, the creamer urns were empty, the self serve counter was dirty and sticky The excuse was they were so busy but there was enough 2 servers/staff standing around gazing at the crowd There were maybe 2-3 pastries left I had tried to make a cup of coffee but with those conditions I couldn’t. My wife ordered a chai tea and 15 minutes later it still wasn’t made We complained and the staff responded to the rescue but I swore we wouldn’t go again Well I was talked into giving them another chance the following day and honestly it was worse!! My wife ordered but never got her chai tea after waiting 20 minutes, there was one pastry left that we ordered only to have it grabbed by another server because it was “sold”- And it wasn’t busy!! Then we canceled the order and just paid for a coffee and there were three staff standing in a group at the register all watching the transaction What’s wrong with this picture?? DONT BOTHER GOING THERE!! Any and all complaints are met with “ excuses “ That are really systemic in nature- For me this is evidence of extremely POOR MANAGEMENT! Weekends in summer in MAINE??- and a bakery is out of baked items at 11:00 am? C’mon people- wake up to good management principles and think about supply and...
