We’ve been wanting to try Longfellow’s for a while. Had heard great reviews about the prime rib and read not to judge a book by its cover. While it is in a small strip mall next to an abandoned variety store don’t let that stop you. We went there last year but unknown to us it was closed. Apparently there are new owners and it was being refurbished. While I can’t compare it to the previous place I found almost everything about Longfellow’s excellent. The decor and layout is very nice. One side is a nice horseshoe bar with a few high tops. We didn’t have a reservation (Wednesday night 6:00 pm), but we were offered one of the high tops and were seated immediately. The bar has Keno, several tv’s and is decorated in a lot of Red Sox memorabilia. The bar appeared to be mostly local regulars, as everyone was chatting with everyone else. The restaurant side is nicely decorated in a Cape Cod and Nautical motif. There were mostly couples in our age bracket (50’s -70’s) and one family. They do have kids meals and the kids get a take home frisbee with their meal.
The Mrs and I each started our meals with a glass of wine with a nice pour. The Mrs opted for fish and chips and I had the broiled scrod, baked potato and corn. The Mrs had a very ample serving of fish yet finished it because it was so good. My portions were very good as well. My fish was piping hot as was my corn. My only issue with anything was my baked potato. It was a good size, cooked fine and very tasty. It just wasn’t hot, I’d be generous if I even said it was warm, not cold but more like room temperature. It was edible but I use butter not sour cream, so it barely melted. Which I might add the pads of butter were a nice soft consistency so the did melt nicely on the corn. Most restaurants give you the butter pads right out of the refrigerator and don’t melt. Butter does not have to be refrigerated and it’s nice to see a restaurant that knows that.
Our server, Ari was very efficient and pleasant. He was around when needed and did an excellent job of taking care of us.
A small miscue like a room temperature baked potato would not keep us from coming back. The menu is very extensive and for a fussy eater like me( as I’m told by my entire family) there are lots of items I’m dying to try. As we are on the Cape off and on all year I hope Longfellow’s continues to be as good as our first visit. It just might be...
Read moreGood food! I ordered the Ritz Cracker baked Haddock with a Twice Baked Potato. It was delicious. The service wasn't the fastest on the planet, but it wasn't slow. The restaurant was full, and we still received our food within an acceptable time frame. It's not cheap, and they upcharge on a lot of stuff, including simple substitutions, but it's not outrageously priced at all. It's comparable to any other small Cape Cod restaurant that is privately owned. We had my fiance's sister, step mother, and father with us, so we were possibly the largest table being served. Every other table was occupied, and the bar was full. The patrons that night were on the older side, to the point that they commented on our young age (30's). It was cute and funny, and everyone had a good laugh over it. The entire dining/bar area is quite small, but it's cozy and comfortable. The bathrooms were clean. The wait staff was solely made up of "no nonsense" older women, but they were still friendly in their own Cape Cod way. DON'T expect fake/rehearsed smiles and high pitched, melodious voices. They were knowledgeable about the menu, fast moving, accommodating to a point, and humorous in their own way. But, if you're in their way, or your chair is sticking out too far into their service path, they won't be too shy to let you know! If you're taking too long to decide, they will TELL you they're coming back in a bit when you're ready. It's clear that THEY run the place. My fiance's sister is 30, but she has special needs, and is much more like a child than an adult. They treated her like any other person, which was nice for once. They didn't treat her like a 3 year old. She even choked on her food at one point and threw up on her plate. Patrons and staff noticed from afar, and let us as a family handle it and clean it up. It was actually refreshing because we get very sick of the attention and dirty/pitiful/disgusted looks sometimes when we go out! No one stared at us, made any rude comments, or paid us any attention at all really. It was a good night, with good food, and a small, old fashioned/ "hole in the wall" type atmosphere. My fiance and I look forward to visiting again by ourselves for...
Read moreWe found this Resturant earlier the month and loved it. The server was excellent and the food was fantastic. She started with bread that seemed like it just came out of a fancy bakery. The salad came next and we were surprised how large it was. Crisp greens, fresh tomato's great dressing. For the entree, my steak was one of the best I ever had, cooked to perfection. The seafood I was told was fantastic. This restaurant exceeded our expectations so naturally we told our friends about it.
We went back this week and brought some friends. We were disappointed and could not believe it was the same restaurant. We ordered potato skins to start which seemed like a really long time before they came. So my wife asked for some of the delicious bread (twice before it was brought) and it was stale. We then ordered the entree’s (still no potato skins). When the potato skins came, the bottom of each was burnt. We then got our salad’s before we finished the first potato skin. The salad size looked half the size of the salad we got last time we came. The entree’s came before we could finish our salad. The steak was over cooked and dry.
The server was nice but seemed more interested in talking with her friends at the other end of the restaurant. We were all very disappointed and could not understand how this time it could be so different. We could only guess it was different people working. Our friends said they will pick the restaurant next...
