I came without a reservation by myself at just about 5pm. The waitress sat me in a very dark themed room. I guess they were going for fine dining but besides the couple who I heard also say it's dark they grabbed a phone light to view the menu, but for me it was dark but not that dark, there weren't any tables with people that were dressed up. I wore a T-shirt and shorts with a ball hat but took it off once I was seated.
The menu was a la carte, so I ordered the daily special of cheese and heirloom tomatoes on top of a crustini under a bed of pesto and balsamic vinaigrette and it also had a side salad of micro arugula and heirloom tomatoes tossed in a light vinaigrette. Very tasty and very large for a single person.
And while I waited for my main entree they gave me bite sized pretzels with a cheese sauce. A great diversion from the bread basket. Hot and fresh. As I waited the staff misplaced my salad and gave it to the couple next to me, that was why I knocked you down a star. When you serve expensive food you expect the service to be on point as well.
Once I finished my starter the waitress removed my plate promptly and then gave me a knife for my entree. When it arrived I knew I was in for a treat, a 14oz rib eye cooked medium rare with an au provie demi on top. And a side of mashed garlic potatoes. Let's get the zero out of the way, the potatoes where very underwhelming. They just tasted like very boiled potatoes that lacked any salt and it was way over whipped without any texture at all.
Now for the hero of the night, the rib eye. I could tell that it was cooked under a broiler and not touched in any way. Just a fantastic, melt in your mouth, damn good steak, too bad I put all this sauce on it. They shouldn't have to upsell you to add an item that actually deracts from this gorgeous piece of meat. But since I like pepper and it wasn't overpowering and the demi was a nice addition.
So I ate in comfortable silence while thoughts of this is a really good steak but after eating the salad section I was getting full but I wanted to try a dessert and it's not printed the waitress had to recite the menu for me but I didn't mind, it gave me more time to digest the meal I ate. So I love carrot cake and that's what I ordered with a coffee
Final bill 140.
Final thoughts, I've noticed that different waitresses tell the specials differently like one lady was all about emphasizing the price while a second didn't, and mine had trouble remembering what the specials where at first, maybe nerves but at a place like this I expect more. She also didn't say the prices either. For me that didn't matter but for some it might.
Also I've noticed after sitting and seeing people order that what I ordered was the item that everyone wanted but they didn't pic the sauce with the steak, and some shared their meal together while others ordered the carrots or twice baked potatoes as their side and shared because the potions where made for two.
I know I don't like to talk about price at a place like this but man when did it become so out of reach for so many people due to the prices. This place should be packed but there were only 6 total tables that I've counted at 5pm when The steakhouse, in Wells, has a line...
Read moreWe took my Dad to Nick's for the first time for a Father's day dinner, Saturday. There were 4 of us in our party. Upon arrival, we were promptly greeted and sat outdoors (with a reservation). Nice night for our door dining! Our waitress came over (I forget her name) and welcomed us to dinner and took our drink order and reviewed specials. After scanning the menu, we put in a few apps to start, Calamari and Cheesesteak Egg Rolls. While waiting for our apps, our waitress brought us pretzel bites with a cheese sauce - pretty good! Our apps came promptly after ordering and were just average in our opinion. At $19 for Calamari and $17 for Eggrolls, these did not "wow" us for the semi steep price tag. For mains across the table there was a caesar salad with chicken, truffle Mac and cheese, shrimp cocktail, ribeye, filet, creamed spinach, truffle fries, and garlic mash potatoes. I got the Mac and salad with chicken. My salad was very small, severely overdressed with an overwhelming anchovie flavor. The chicken was seasoned well, but very dry. The Mac was gritty and lacked sauce and seasoning. My husband asked for a medium filet and got more on the well side (he wasn't thrilled) but ate it any way. My Dad ordered the ribeye, medium, got it more on the well side, mash, which he said was ice cold in the middle and lacked seasoning, and creamed spinach. My dad was disappointed with his meal (he just had a heart procedure a few months ago and has been on a strict diet, so he was really looking forward to splurging at dinner) . My mom had shrimp cocktail which she said was good, and mac. We are not complainers, to the average person this would be a 4 out of 5 meal.
However, with an extensive background in culinary, and being a foodie family, we tend to take food pretty seriously, and dine out often. It's a double edge sword to complain about food at a restaurant. If you don't say anything, how would the kitchen staff know, and if you do say something, you are "picky". Sending food back is just not something we do, and that's OK. Maybe this was an "off" night for Nick and his kitchen staff, since most reviews are very positive. But, we have nothing to base it on, but this one experience alone.
I paid $397 with gratuity tonight for dinner. We would recommend the service and patronage all day long, but based on our meal and the food/quality or lack thereof last night, we will not be returning any time soon,...
Read moreWow, where do I begin? I took my wife here for dinner and asked two of our friends to join us. After reading reviews I thought this place would be a great steak place to take my beautiful wife who loves a great filet. When we went to order we noticed the steak prices were through the roof but we figured what the hell, it's a steak house so let's try it. We noticed for the amount of a single steak that they weren't served with sides like most other steak houses but again, we went with it. I purchased the ribeye for about $58 and wife her $57 or so filet and my friend also a ribeye. My wife and I asked for it to be cooked medium well and my friend, medium! 3 of the 4 of us received our steaks well done and the meat was charred so much you couldn't really enjoy it. I really felt bad for my wife because we all know a filet should be really tender and I had to watch her fight to chew her steak. I was so disappointed and at times angry that after a total of $215 I said we're never coming back here. My wife asked me to leave it alone which was hard for me because I expect things to be as ordered for especially what we paid. I did have opportunity to state my frustration with the waitress and the manager who came out to ask how everything was but their was a party of 14 or so sitting right next to our table and I eventually swallowed my pride and took the loss! If you ask for a steak cooked medium well it should have some small pink in the middle, not fully cooked and charred ESPECIALLY A FILET!! We've been to the steakhouse in Wells Me and had great steaks there that came with sides and I passed it up to try this new place and I regret it. Other than that it was a beautiful small place with great and polite staff, just maybe they might want to reevaluate their chefs/cooks on how NOT to butcher and ruin...
