L’Herbanyste — Restaurant in Ho Chi Minh City

Lovely spot to relax and enjoy delicious and healthy food, a wonderful menu covering food and drinks (the beer options are a bit limited sadly - but good if you like German beer). The restaurant has both indoor and outdoor seating, with some well covered outdoor seating ideal for sunny or wet days (that's were I am now). I enjoyed a lovely grilled cheese sandwich (a common choice for me) but I was tempted by many other options here, and I was not disappointed at all. My drink was a banana chocolate smoothie that was quite delicious, followed by a lot black coffee. A great place to meet and enjoy peaceful chats or just to relax with a book (or kindle in my case). The customers cover a wide range and thankfully all maintained the peaceful atmosphere that exists here, also maintained by the quietly attentive staff. For me, these kind of places are hard to find and once found are often kept secret lest they become overrun by those that demand an audience to their presence, hopefully this place retaina this peaceful ambience, and also it's wonderful vegetarian and vegan menu. We visited here for a publicity do a few days ago, which they catered for wonderfuly, and returning to the peaceful environment today (Saturday lunch) and seeing what appears to be a busy but still peaceful and quiet environment, I can comfortably recommend this place to all, even if you enjoy your meats, I'm sure you would still love this place, as the menu has such a range of adventurous alternatives that can open your mind and taste buds to the vegetarian and vegan world. À midi, nous sommes au restaurant végétarien l’Herbanyste. Nous sommes déjà venus à diverses reprises et ce fut à chaque fois une joie de déjeuner. La pluie tombe doucement. La température a baissé. Elle oscille autour de vingt-six degrés Celsius. Nous choisissons la facilité pour le déjeuner de ce jour, le restaurant étant à deux pas de chez nous. Durant la préparation des mets, je promène mon regard sur la décoration attrayante. Je l’attarde sur une étagère en bois qui accueille une collection éclectique de livres, témoins silencieux de voyages littéraires variés. Sur un des rayonnages, un petit terrarium abrite un paysage verdoyant miniature où une statuette de Bouddha repose paisiblement parmi les plantes vertes, créant une oasis de sérénité. Les livres, aux tranches et couvertures colorées, racontent des histoires allant de la philosophie à la fiction. Près du terrarium, le gros livre d’Ayn Rand, intitulé « The Fountainhead », trône de par sa taille. Deux petites figurines en uniforme, bleu et rouge, des Lilliputiens dans la bibliothèque, assises côte à côte, ajoutent une plaisante touche ludique à l’ensemble.

Les minutes caressent les aiguilles du cadran. La jeune serveuse, courtoise et attentionnée , vient nous demander : « Bạn có gọi bake potato không ? » [Souhaitez-vous commander des pommes de terre au four ?]. Nous acceptons volontiers sa proposition. La préparation des mets raffinés prend son temps. Une trentaine de minutes s'écoule agréablement. Je continue plaisamment mes observations. À ma gauche, je tombe sous le charme d’un autre terrarium luxuriant qui s’épanouit, vibrant de vie et de couleurs. Les plantes aux feuilles vertes et pourpres s’entrelacent, formant un tapis dense et varié qui évoque une forêt tropicale miniature. La lumière douce et multicolore illumine délicatement chaque feuille, créant un jeu d’ombres et de reflets qui danse sur les parois latérales transparentes.

Le repas arrive. Nous nous régalons. Je savoure, avec les deux toasts à l’avocat magnifiquement présentés, des champignons poêlés nấm linh chi nâu. Connu sous le nom de cristal brun, le champignon présente un pied blanc surmonté d’un chapeau de couleur brune. Je trouve leur texture à la fois croquante et élastique, avec une saveur légèrement sucrée. Jimmy Cliff chante "You can get it if you really want". Tout comme moi, un jeune homme vietnamien, assis avec sa compagne sur un canapé duo, se lève pour admirer la décoration. Après le repas, nous donnons un bon pourboire à la jeune serveuse qui, étonnée, demande si c’est bien pour elle ; elle est touchée par notre geste. En sortant, nos pas nous mènent un peu plus avant dans la rue du restaurant, où les bâtiments sur la gauche sont en cours de construction. Nous voyons le Landmark 81 au loin dont une partie du gratte-ciel est enveloppée de brume. Nous retournons...

The food tasted fine, not so impressive. But everything was cold when it was served, especially the cooked mushrooms, spinaches, asparagus... even the tofu was not as hot as freshly taken from then oven. I felt like the food was prepared long ago then they just heated up. When I asked the waiter, he told me I was the first to say so. Aha that made me so uncomfortable. Then he explained it was because of the fan, and because some ingredients were cooked before others bla bla bla. And at the payment time, i paid with card so I asked for the paper credit card receipt to double check the amount. And once again, he told me very few customers asked for it. With the expensive price that I paid for food and service, I was unprofessionally treated like I didn’t belong to the typical customer group of this restaurant.
