The southern answer to Kings Park! Set on Point Heatcote, high above the Swan River, Heathcote is named after named after George Gage Heathcote, son of Admiral Sir Henry Heathcote, a midshipman on HMS Success, who is said to have been the first European to land there. It was one of the landing and camp sites of Captain James Stirling during his exploration of the Swan River in April 1827. Point Heathcote was considered as a site for a new capital city by Stirling, before selecting its current position. From 1929 until 1994, it was the site of the Heathcote Mental Reception Home, later known as Heathcote Hospital. Although originally considered by the WA State Government for demolition, and the site given over for housing, a vociferous and determined campaign managed to save the heritage site and buildings for public access and enjoyment. Heathcote is now a protected heritage precinct, and the original buildings are used for cultural purposes. Read moreFabulous playground. Bluewater bar, grill and function centre is on the hill overlooking the city. Great view. Great place to go for a meal. Not much in terms of light food ($25 lunch specials). The cafe is closed mid-week (I am assuming winter only but not sure). Which is a shame. Even a vending machine with sandwiches would have been great, instead we ended up leaving and going elsewhere for lunch. There is a fabulous artist market there once a month in summer. Check it out.
