Whether able bodied or mobility impaired, Oxley Creek Common has so much to offer picnickers, walkers, budding ornithologists & nature photographers, cyclists, and dog walkers. The walking trails add up to about 8km. There's also a pontoon for canoeists, and even room for bagpipers, who I've seen practicing there due to the area's local isolation - although I like bagpipes so can't fathom why someone wouldn't like to hear them play ;) The dedicated picnic area on the Rocklea side has a very well maintained cover and toilets for those groups that need the facilities, or plenty of verdant lawn to set up on. Being around lots of bush, long grass, in a 115 Ha/284 ACF, creek running through, has quite a lot of wildlife, including snakes, like the 2mtr venomous one we saw on the 20th Dec. No one hurt, it came unseen only a couple of meters from one of our group, until he moved, then saw it. Snake then moved away from B B Ques near weather stn, to be monitored, others warned, as it moved towards, then past toilet block, into the scrub, toward the creek. This was at 1100am. We are a group of 34 ladies from the northern end of the Gold Coast who were on a coach trip to Brisbane and surrounds yesterday for a day of shopping. We stopped for our picnic lunch in this delightful place for an hour.
Thanks to the Brisbane City Council for providing a fantastic environment and to all the volunteers who belong to 'The Oxley Creek Common Community Groups Association' for all their hard work in keeping this gorgeous area in such pristine condition.
