I mean… how often do you see the sky littered with hot air balloons? So once a year in Canberra during the Enlighten Festival you can watch a heap of hot air balloons take off and float across the city skyline at sunrise 🌅 🎈 We highly recommend jumping into a balloon because the views are just insane and the overall experience and peacefulness you feel up there is like no other! Alternatively if you prefer to have your feet firmly on the ground then you can watch pretty much from anywhere in Canberra, our top picks would be from the edges of Lake Burley Griffin or even the National Arboretum! Lake Burley Griffin is an artificial lake with 6.64 sq km of surface area and mainly fed from the Molonglo River with primary dam being Scrivener Dam. I was at the Summernats in 94 and it was so hot the local pool was overheating so we went to the lake for a swim & found out the hard way the water was Freezing 🥶 Yes it was cool ! Also worth noting there are 5 main species of fish and 2 islands within Lake Burley Griffin which is actually named after Walter Burley Griffin the American architect that won the privilege of designing the city of Canberra . Quite remarkable as I can’t imagine Canberra without this lake .

Bloody brilliant Lake. Man made but this thing really makes Canberra. Whenever I am in town I like to go for a jog between the two bridges, or as the locals call it “bridge to bridge” - what will they think of next, creative folks here! Anyway there’s lots of dawgs walking their dogs and if you’re lucky you might even see some baby ducks. Great spots for bike rides, picnics or a bit of fitness, get around it ya bloody dingo dingus. Keep an eye out for the bloke in one of the photos, he’s a local fitness guru named Bogdan and he is always happy to give you tips on running form or boot camp.

A truly marvellous feature of Canberra. There are three basins; East, West and Central. It is possible to walk around all three with excellent walking and cycling paths. There are many picnic spots, toilets, some cafes and outdoor gym areas. The central basin walk is around 5-6km, the eastern basin around 13km, the western basin around 16km and if you take in all the peninsulas you can cover 35km. Good to know if planning a walk, run or cycle. One of my favourite running spots and a great place to take visitors. 🏃♀️🥰

Beautiful ang huge lake, plenty of attractions around it like parks, museums, art galleries, national library. Also some restaurants and cafes. The trail around the lake is awesome for walking, run, cycling. Easy access for people with disabilities and parents with prams. Lots of places for a nice picnic. The lake is also good for water sports. Definitely a must visit in Canberra.

Lake Burley Griffin is an artificial lake in the centre of Canberra, the capital of Australia. It was completed in 1963 after the Molonglo River, which ran between the city centre and Parliamentary Triangle, was dammed.
