The Spit is an iconic area of the Gold Coast. There is plenty here for everyone. You have the rock walls that are easily accessible by foot on the south wall. This area gives a fantastic view south looking towards the Sand Pumping Jetty and with Surfers Paradise beyond that. You then have the off leash dog area in between the south rock wall and the Sand Pumping jetty. It’s a favourite for dog owners as the dogs have a place to swim, dig and interact with other dogs. There are plenty of bags and bins available for owners to collect any dog droppings and dispose of them. Wave riders and surfers also enjoy the area as it offers good wave breaks in a semi protected area from some prevailing winds. As of 1st January 2020 the Sand Pumping jetty is under going some renovations and won’t reopen until midway through the year. When it’s open and if you are a keen fisherman it’s a perfect place to drop a line. When the sand pumping jetty is open, there is a small kiosk on the jetty where you can by snacks and bait. The kiosk is also in charge of taking a small fee to access the jetty, but its well worth it. And like the rock wall it’s also a great vantage point to walk out to the end for a fantastic view of the Gold Coast and the watching the surfers catch the waves. There is a good ammenities block in the car parking area that have showers and toilets. There is also a very good cafe that offers good food and drinks. If you walk west from the south rock wall you will find an area that has been designated for snorkelling and diving. It offers easy access with a jetty to the water line. Beyond that is a sand bar spit and park area which offers numerous locations to sit, relax, swim, and enjoy many water sport opportunities. If you are a boatie or a sailor, then there is a safe anchorage area in between the sand spit and beach. The Spit also has the best parking area of any beach location. It’s rare not to find a spot to park. The only issue can be that on a busy day you can expect to be caught in a bit of a traffic jam as cars make their way in and out...
Read moreThe parking near the fishing area, CLOSES at 8PM!! There is a $60 dollar release fee so I am just warning people who just wants a nice stroll late at night.
The place has such dim lighting you can't even see the signs warning the closure time, you spend more of your time focusing on the road so you don't hit anything. I feel sorry for those including me that they grabbed money from because of this remarkable tactic of dim lighting, plain signs with no change of font size for closed times and have the release fee warning + security contact number for those parked in trying to get out and not faced towards people going into the parking area.
I wouldn't be making this bad review just for this because Australia does have strange closing times. I am reviewing this area due to the fact that my mum called the security number to get a lady who had disgusting customer service. My mum accidentally said the card number wrong because the environment was dark and it was not her card but mine, the lady then proceeded to say "Stop mucking around, your 20 minutes wait to get out is going to turn to a 2 hour wait". You don't say that to paying customers at all, I know its late and you're probably tired, but if you are " Just trying to do your job" with that attitude, I suggest to replace her with someone with consideration...
