Went on the weekend with my partner. We spent two hours in there sitting on different chairs for different perspectives. The best was right in the middle we felt swallowed by a magical field being able to watch the wind dance through the lights. I grew up in this area and spent a lot of my childhood exploring around the river and around the lock. I’ve never seen it have life threaded through there as I did with the cafe and new install. Mildura truly continues to grow and surprise me even if growing up here was difficult I find new ways to love it. I see a lot of people saying it was boring as it’s the same thing the whole way through, that crossed my mind, it may not be for everyone but it’s a truly beautiful roll out and effort. Subtle and whimsical. We are oversaturated with intensity as a means for attention to be demanded but I enjoy the that the space gently invites us to slow down, be introspective and I don’t think we would of got as much out of it had we quickly walked a lap. It would be nice to have a gentle ambient soundscape through there but that’s just me as a music lover. While I acknowledge the conversations around ticket pricing it’s sad to see something that’s reinvigorating a forgotten space to hold life, play and togetherness. I can’t remember the last time I’ve seen so many people down there, decades. Yet another pocket of Mildura opens up and activates. If you want something free or cheap for the kids go to Woodsies gem shop for $2 maze time. Lots of sparkly things to look at also. The lights here are beautifully unique and to see a landscape I grew up with and adore to be transformed into a jellyfish meadow is magical. Go later in the night if you want a quieter experience. Any new space will have its teething period. I trust that the right people are listening and look forward to ticket prices being revised for further accessibility :)

We visited on a Wednesday and there was about 12 of us waiting to go in. Weather forecast said rain would arrive around 7pm so with umbrellas in hand we aimed to complete the long trail(2.4km) in an hour. This proved to be a great plan. Signposting was great, and there were staff along the trails to point you the right way if unsure, which was great. All staff were friendly and seemed genuinely happy to see us there. As the sun got lower in the sky, and the moon rose, we started to get a sense of what the lights would get like, but it was when darkness set it it all came to life. It felt like walking through an alien landscape, especially once you were separated from other groups and could enjoy it as a peacefully, immersive experience. We wandered happily around taking photos and it was only as we neared the exit gate that we felt the first drops of rain. An hour was plenty of time, and we raced back to the car just before the heavier rain started! This was a lovely experience. Would be very interested in returning for FOSO later in the year.

Big fan of Bruce Munro- and this installation was as good an experience as his Field of Lights at Uluṟu. We spent around two hours meandering through the different trails, getting slightly lost (as much as you can on a very small island)- just getting immersed in the atmosphere and experience. Very tranquil, beautiful place- only complaint is cost is a little high but given regional location that is understandable. This event needs more publicity to let out of towners know it is on before it is too late.

When planning your Mildura itinerary a visit to the Trail of Lights is a must see. It is located at lock 11 island booking can be made online. Standard single entry full price is $45.00, family concession and children pricing is available. You can also opt for an annual subscription which allows multiple entries. Allow approximately 1-1 1/2 hour to follow the trail at lock island. Parking is available and is free. There is a local food vendor with various options including wine. Prices are reasonable. Signage is located near the food and public toilets, there is disability parking 2 vehicle access. The signage for entry is not clear, however meet at the gate to cross over the lock, the area is staffed approximately 5 minutes prior to the first entry which is 6pm over Autumn, winter hours may change. The pathway surface is mostly level and cater for prams, strollers and walk assistance devices. (Walking frames with wheels) From my first visit it’s best to do the external island track first, then cross back and complete the internal trails. Seats are available on all trail paths if you need a rest. Overall a world class experience and an opportunity not...

A light show reused from Darwin 2019 Light Trail closed down due to Covid 19. Millions squandered! Who actually pocketed all the funding? As it did not all go on this display! Installed by volunteers. Pretty at first you realise there is no focal point or sense of story to the artiste Bruce Munro's catastrophic money grab. He should have not been paid the exhorbitant fee for this below par event. So what do you actually see? Cross the bridge to the island some lovely fairy lights from Darwin 2019 light show follow the trail and turn a gentle corner it’s all one and the same, no narrative no swaying in time to music no change in coloured lights, turn another corner and you come across a few coloured lit up fishing poles, once again reused from Darwin’s 2019 trail of lights! Bar the extortionist entry fee the whole exhibit is a non event! Dont waste your money šŸ’° go to the pub instead… thankfully the organiser Peter Alexander has resigned! If not pushed, just because you have a business degree doesnt mean you are a saviour for tourism. Accountants cant run...
