The Oberon Visitors Information Centre is well worth a visit. Staff are friendly and knowledgeable. Debra provided some great local tips about fossicking and local wildlife. The office is able to provide a fossicking kit including shovel and pans etc for a hire fee of $20. The turn off from the main road onto the unsealed track to the Porters Retreat fossicking site when we went had some pretty big holes in it. This could have been challenging for regular city cars. Debra also mentioned that there were wild kangaroo mobs nearby in the bush area near the golf course and dam. We were lucky to see when we went. Let them know if you are interested in wildlife. Jenolan Caves and the majestic Kanangra – Boyd National Park are just a stones throw away and they can give you plenty of tips. Thanks!

The staff was incredibly helpful, proactive, and courteous! As we were passing through Oberon, we wanted to see the famous snowfall the area is known for. One staff member kindly provided us with a city map and marked the route to Black Springs. She also patiently answered all our questions. Thank you so much! Btw, if you are wondering who we are, we bought the spider key chain and the hand cream from you guys😀

We always visit the local tourism office in a new town for handy information and tips. Oberon tourism namely Deborah was extremely helpful, knowledgeable and offered unbiased opinions on local attractions and camp site recommendations. It's always a pleasure to deal with people who are knowledgable and passionate about their job role. Totally recommend!!

Don't waste your money on the $30 fossicking kit. I took the kids to hire a kit on our holidays. We were told that the main fossicking area could not be accessed due to roadworks and were given vague directions and a map to another area in the state forest. We were not told that you needed a 4wd to access the tracks but luckily our car was 4wd. We drove along all the accessible tracks and walked through the forest for 30 minutes and could not find any water or dam. There is no signage or map showing where the dam should be, just a sign off the forestry road saying fossicking area. We headed back to the information centre and explained that we could not find any water. The extremely rude manager said too bad, they don't give refunds because you can't find the dam. I thought tourist information centres are supposed to help people, not rip people off. Safe to say we won't be visiting...

Went out mushrooming for a day in Oberon and stopped in at the visitor's centre so we could get some handy information about the mushroom species. Was greeted by a lovely lady at the desk who helped us with a map and detailed information on how to get to the best spots, as well as pamphlets about the mushroom types. She was a great deal of help, and after finding the mushrooms, we ducked back in to just say thanks, and have a go at the noodling patch (which is great for fossicking practice!). The staff are incredibly helpful and kind, and were a big part of the reason we had such a great day out. Well worth dropping in before exploring Oberon so you can get some great guidance, and have...
