Yungabarra is a lovely town, which we probably wouldn't have visited if not for its reputation for platypus spotting. We've been twice, in 2006 and in 2018, both times in winter. We saw platypus each time, and more than one. We started at the viewing platform but walked along the river to the bridge that goes across towards the town. If you walk quietly, with soft steps, then you stand a good chance. Each time we went in the early to mid morning. Keep an eye out for little ripples emanating from the bank. We stayed still while the platypus were on the surface and crept forwards when they dived. Ended up sat as a family on the bank watching one feed no more than 5m away. Great experience. If you have no luck there's plenty to see in Yungabarra anyway....

I would highly recommend not just visiting the viewing platform, but also checking out the Peterson Creek Wildlife Botanical Track at the end of Bunya street. Follow the trail down to Frawley’s pool and keep your eyes open. This was a life dream to...
Read moreThis place is amazing. It’s a hidden gem ! I have been here twice and the 2nd time spotted a platypus within 100 metres on the walk. Parking is great fits about 12 cars. It has a viewing area so you can sit and watch the platypus. Not really wheelchair friendly as the walkway is dirt and rock there are a couple of stairs but is an easy walk threw the natural habitat of many different critters. Whilst watching the water. I had a water dragon next to me feeding on bugs. The path is marked and has...
