Chandrima Uddan, also known as "Zia Uddan," is a prominent park located in Dhaka, Bangladesh, near the National Parliament House. This expansive green space offers a blend of natural beauty, history, and recreational opportunities, making it a popular destination for locals and tourists alike. Here’s a detailed review of the park:
Location and Accessibility:
Chandrima Uddan is situated in the heart of Dhaka, adjacent to Sher-e-Bangla Nagar and near major landmarks like the National Parliament Building. Its central location makes it easily accessible by various modes of transportation, including buses, rickshaws, and private vehicles. The proximity to key areas of Dhaka adds to its popularity, as visitors can explore the park after visiting other nearby attractions.
Natural Beauty and Layout:
The park is characterized by its sprawling greenery, tranquil lakes, and winding walkways. Large trees, manicured lawns, and vibrant flower beds create a serene and calming environment. The highlight of the park is its beautiful lake, which features a picturesque bridge that serves as a popular spot for photography. The lake’s reflective water, especially during sunset, enhances the scenic beauty of the park.
Benches and seating areas are scattered throughout the park, allowing visitors to relax and enjoy the surroundings. The open spaces make it a popular spot for family picnics, leisurely strolls, and outdoor exercise. Early mornings and late afternoons are particularly busy with joggers, fitness enthusiasts, and people practicing yoga.
Memorial Significance:
Chandrima Uddan holds historical significance as it houses the grave of Ziaur Rahman, a former president of Bangladesh. His mausoleum is an important landmark within the park, and many visitors come to pay their respects. The marble structure is simple yet dignified, blending into the overall aesthetic of the park.
While the park itself is a recreational space, the presence of this historical monument adds a reflective and solemn dimension, attracting those interested in the political history of Bangladesh.
Amenities and Facilities:
The park is well-maintained, with clean paths and gardens. However, the facilities could be improved in some areas. Restrooms and food stalls are available, but they are not as well-kept as they could be. The park has designated areas for street vendors who sell snacks and refreshments, which adds a local flavor to the visitor experience.
One of the most significant improvements in recent years is the security within the park. Security personnel are present, and CCTV cameras have been installed to ensure visitor safety. However, there have been occasional reports of minor incidents, so it's advisable to stay alert, especially in less crowded areas.
Recreational Opportunities:
For families, Chandrima Uddan offers plenty of space for children to play. The park is a great spot for flying kites, playing soccer, and other informal sports. It’s also a popular location for photography enthusiasts, especially during spring when the flowers are in full bloom. The lake offers a peaceful setting, and many visitors spend time near its banks, enjoying the view.
While there aren’t formal recreational facilities such as playgrounds or dedicated sports areas, the open space allows for various activities, making it a versatile spot for people of all ages.
Challenges:
Despite its many advantages, Chandrima Uddan faces a few challenges. The park can become overcrowded during weekends and public holidays, leading to littering and general wear and tear on the facilities. While efforts are made to keep the park clean, the maintenance staff can struggle to keep up during peak times.
Another challenge is the lack of organized activities or events. Many visitors feel that the park could benefit from cultural or recreational programming, such as outdoor performances, fitness classes, or community events, to engage visitors further.
