Toshakhana means a storehouse where various precious gifts of the state are kept. These gifts include domestic or foreign souvenirs, commemorative coins, various types of souvenirs, portraits or photographs of great people, artworks, folk art or handicraft samples etc.
When the custom of giving gifts to the Head of State has been introduced since independence, His Excellency the President and the Hon'ble Prime Minister have been arranged here to display the gifts given by the Heads of State or Government or famous persons of different countries. The collection of Toshakhana is increasing day by day due to the fact that various domestic and foreign institutions, foreign ambassadors and famous people have given various artworks, monuments, crests etc. rich in history and traditions of Bangladesh and other countries of the world as gifts. Two and a half hundred important collections from Toshakhana have been donated to the Bangladesh National Museum for preservation and display. The Museum's Modern Art and World Art Department is displaying these items.
In 2018, Rashtriya Toshakhana Museum building was constructed next to Bangabandhu Military Museum in Vijay Sarani so that the common people of the country have the opportunity to see the gifts given to the Head of State and Government. On August 22, 2018, 726 different types of gift items were transferred from the present Toshakhana to the museum for preservation and public viewing. The treasury includes a flag of Bangladesh that was taken to the moon and sample of moon rock. There are more than one thousand artifacts and 250 artifacts were donated to the Bangladesh National Museum. The Toshkhana is managed by the Cabinet Division.5]
