Although the exhibition has been rehoused during restoration work the exhibition we felt was surprisingly large, we imagined a smaller collection. As a first time visitor to Brussels entering through the classical architecture of the gallery with its large-scale paintings was impressive.

The exhibition is set our with a chronology of significant moments of his life at the beginning, and progresses through the stages of his artistic influences an development. The exhibition appears small initially but one gallery leads on to another gallery space, and there are many accomplished Surrealist pieces, which are impressive to be able to view close up.

A surprisingly interesting addition to the Magritte canon, and on top of that a 1+1 museum as you also have the chance to marvel at 20th century abstract art. You start your visit to René Magritte's House in the adjacent building, with the colourful collection of the Abstract Art museum which focuses on Belgian artists and then you enter the Magritte house. Beside the interesting memorabilia and some original art you will get the chance to see the reproduced copies of Magritte paintings that were destroyed in the past in various instances, most famously during a bombing in London in 1940. The museum is easily accessible by Tram line 93 from the centre...

This is René Magritte’s home in Jette, not to be confused with the the large Magritte museum in the centre of Brussels. As such, it’s a small and intimate place to visit and is focused on Magritte’s life. When we visited, we were the only people there. It’s an interesting place, with objects from Magritte’s life, his paintings (and replicas), and also includes a modern art exhibition in the neighbouring building. If you have mobility problems, this is not the place to visit as you need to climb up and down several narrow staircases.
