GariMaya Gift Shop — Attraction in Stann Creek District

The shop itself is FULL of cool Belizean gifts and souvenirs but the prices are high! We bought the same beautiful hammock and hard wood bowl for 1/2 the cost at a shop a mile away. The owner however, is very kind and helpful. He delivered our purchases back to our resort at no cost and wouldn’t even accept a tip when my husband tried. He said “ that’s what I do!” I am confused about the reviews that state the prices are better than anywhere else though. I really liked a beautiful butterfly picture they had but it was 175blz and since it was our first day I thought I would hold off to see if I found anything at any other shop. I found the same exact butterfly pic for 1/2 the price a mile away. He did not have as big of selection on things but the price was half. I also bought 5 little coin purses for 15blz each and when I was at the Belize Zoo yesterday they had the same EXACT purses for 5 !! The zoos TShirts are way cheaper too. I was fortunate to visit this gift shop twice while recently in Belize. There are so many cool Belizean pieces, art work, hand crafted bowls, etc. there. However, besides that, the owners are beautiful people. I got talking with the wife and told her the reason we went to Belize was to help soothe my grief from losing my husband. She was so touched by my story she gifted me a beautiful butterfly picture. I will always look at this picture and remember this beautiful couple and their love for each other and their love and generosity towards me, a stranger. Overpriced tourist trap with rude employees!

Had a woman follow me around the entire time as if I was going to steal something and then when I went to buy a single bag of whole bean coffee they told me it would be $40 Belizian dollars. I said, "OK, so 20 dollars US," she replied no it will be 40 USD if you pay with card. I replied "ok I'm good, thank you, have a nice day," and she got an attitude with me shouting at me as I walked out that she had to pay taxes. First time I've run into someone rude while here in Hopkins. Would not recommend. It's a tourist trap that's way overpriced. $40.00 USD for a regular bag of whole bean...
