I loved my visit to Vermilion Lakes — it’s such a peaceful escape with stunning views of the mountains reflected perfectly in the calm water. It felt like a hidden gem just minutes from downtown Banff.
The area has several easy walking trails along the lakeshore that are perfect for a relaxing stroll or wildlife spotting. I saw ducks, geese, and even a few curious deer nearby. It’s great for photography, especially early in the morning or at sunset when the light is magical and the reflections are crystal clear.
There are picnic spots too, so it’s a lovely place to bring snacks and just soak in the natural beauty. If you’re into kayaking or canoeing, you might find rentals nearby to explore the lakes from the water.
A few tips from my visit: • Bring insect repellent, especially in warmer months — mosquitoes can be pretty active near the water. • Wear comfortable shoes for walking the trails. • The parking lot can fill up quickly on busy days, so try to get there early. • Don’t forget your camera — the views are spectacular from almost every angle.

Read moreVermillion lakes are beautiful regardless of the season. The iconic Mount Rundle sits in the background, with Sulfur Mountain to the side. Every time you pass by them, a different view awaits. You can get to them by car just before the entrance into the town of Banff, with clear signs pointing towards a small road. As it’s not too far from town, a lot of people also opt to walk or bike to the lakes.
During the winter time, the lakes generally freeze over - however some parts of the lake doesn’t freeze over completely as hot springs are present. My favourite season is the end of Sept/beginning of Oct, when the trees that line the path has turned golden yellow - it really makes for a breathtaking drive. During warmer seasons when the lakes have thawed, the reflection on the water makes for great photo ops, and the sunrise/sunset above the lakes during any season are not...
Read moreOne of our favorite places to visit! If you have a kayak, or if you don’t…rent one because you must put in at the first big lake you come to in the chain along the highway off the Transcanada Hwy exit on west exit to Banff. Paddle SE across and enter the inlet creek. Paddle the creek for the most memorable and enjoyable experience. It is slow flowing so you aren’t physically pushed and you will see tons of wildlife, flowers and very few paddlers. You eventually end up in the Bow River near the townsite where you can paddle some of the river or just turn back for an easy paddle back to the truck. There’s a pull out for parking just before the first lake and a small dock to help with loading and unloading. Photo op of Mount Rundall...
