I did the Fenland Trail in the evening on my way back to Banff town from Vermilion Lakes, and it was the perfect little detour to end the day. It’s an easy, flat loop through beautiful old spruce forest, and you really feel tucked away in nature even though you’re so close to town.
I loved how quiet it was in the evening — just the sound of the creek and birds. I took my time crossing the wooden bridges and stopping to watch the light fade through the trees. It’s only about 2 km so it doesn’t take long, maybe 30–40 minutes at a relaxed pace.
Some tips from my walk: • If you’re at Vermilion Lakes, it’s really convenient — you can walk or drive a couple of minutes to the Fenland Trail parking lot. • It’s a gravel/dirt path, really easy to follow and suitable for all ages. • Bring bug spray if it’s warm — mosquitoes come out near the water, especially at dusk! • There are benches along the trail if you want to just sit and listen to the creek. • I’d recommend doing it before it’s fully dark — there are no lights on the trail, so plan for daylight or bring a headlamp if you’re late.
This was a nice, gentle way to wind down after visiting Vermilion Lakes — peaceful, easy, and you end up right near town. If you want a quiet forest walk without needing to drive far, Fenland is a great choice. I’ll definitely do it again next time...
Read moreThis is a lovely little trail just as you come into Banff. We went after snow which made the area look wonderful and peaceful.
It's a calming walk throught the woods with loads of scenic areas along the river.
We came across a few people walking their dogs as well as groups and individuals out for a stroll.
Not a challenging trail at all. But nice for a relaxing walk.
It has connecting trails that lead off into Banff town. So it is easily accessible. .
There is also easy parking at the start of the trail, that is also near the Banff town sign - so possibility for a nice photo op if you feel like it.
You could easily complete the loop in 30...
Read moreCute little tail. Easily accessible from the town of Banff, well-maintained and well-marked. Very level and suitable for most mobility levels (though there was a fallen tree across the trail when I visited, so could present obstacle for some users.)
Lots of parking, picnic tables, and two pit toilets.
Unfortunately, the main Banff park highway runs right beside the trail and creates constant traffic noise, which spoils the tranquility of the forest.
3 Stars compared to other trails in the park. This one's nice if you're staying in town for a few days, but otherwise I'd go elsewhere...
