One of the most interesting historical properties in the area for sure! The house itself is fascinating, from the layout to the smallest details. It's open sporadically to the public again, but even if you don't go inside, it's still an amazing place.
The yard is immense and backs onto a lovely forest; it's not maintained (aside from lawn cutting) but when I stand back there I can imagine how incredible it must have been to live here back when it was in its glory!
Definitely wander around & see the buildings besides the house also, my favourite is the little tower in the NE corner but there are a few interesting structures. Every time I come here I find it stirs my imagination and I wonder about the lives of the people who stayed here...
Sad this place hasn't had the upkeep it deserves---it could be a real gem for the city & would be the perfect place for weddings and big events. But it remains a diamond in the rough until then.

As the building was not open to the public at the time of my visit I can only speak to the outdoor appearance of the estate and it is indeed in a poor state. Windows are broken, brick and stone work needs repairing and the shrubs and trees could be better looked after. For such a unique and stately mansion it is a real shame to see it like this. Granted there are signs that work is being done to maintain some aspects of the property. For example a large portion of the perimeter wall has recently been restored and work has been done to preserve the main gate. A quick peek through one of the few windows not boarded over reveals an exquisite gothic inspired interior in dire need of paint and plaster. A point of important Hamilton heritage in major need of some serious...
Read moreFinally got to visit for Doors Open Hamilton today and loved every minute of it. This home is so beautiful. You can see all the potential if it had more funding to be restored. They're in the early stages of restoring this property, so if you're interested in it or would like to see it restored, please donate to the Friends of Auchmar website. The city of Hamilton should realize this would make a wonderful museum like Dundurn Castle or even an event venue that could host high tea like the Prince of Whales in NOTL. It'd also make a beautiful wedding venue! So much potential. I hope it gets restored. Only rated 3 stars because it's currently in need of restoration, so there's not a whole lot to see. But if it was restored, it'd be 5...
