I'm not sure what the designers were thinking, but I was really excited for the new park to open and it was mostly a let-down. The first glaring omission is the lack of big-kids swings. There's only a set of 4 swings, two of which are equipped with toddler seats. It would be a significant improvement to have another set of 4 swings for older kids.
Then there's the large wooden play structures, which the kids can climb and play on. These look pretty dangerous to me, as they're quite tall and kids are expected to climb on top of them. However, in this area, there are some nice obstacles for the kids to play on.
Then there's the "water park", which consists of 4 or 5 holes in the ground that water shoots out of. The previous water park that this replaces had a lot more variety.
The only structure that's a hit with the kids and has kids playing in it all the time is the sand pit with the water lanes and diverters. This piece is genious! It's also the reason this park gets three stars instead of 2.
I also really like the plastic red chairs for the parents...
Read moreToday, I visited Sapperton Park play area with my two sons. This was on the heels of The Great Deceit, where I visited a nearby Starbucks first instead of going immediately to the park. The boys enjoyed the park thoroughly. There is enough variety at the park to maintain the interest of two preschool-aged whelps with limited attention spans and poor impulse control. As mentioned by other reviewers, there is sufficient danger in the height and open concept of the criss-crossing logs to engage some excellent lessons in both parenting and physics. The new playground is also inviting enough to induce a two-year-old with a fear of heights to climb a 12-ladder and somehow dodge a fistfight between two school-aged brothers at the top of the slide. For my part, I enjoyed sitting on the low wall with the rest of the moms, checking my phone. 4...
Read moreAs parks go, this one is fairly bland. A small green space in the middle of Sapperton. There's a sports field with a few trees along the perimeter offering some shade in the summertime. A small kid's playground is located next to the field and away from Columbia St. traffic. Swings, a slide...the basics. The other side of the play area is filled with lots of big leafy trees, great for dogs to run around in (not sure if the park has an official off leash area, but there are always dogs having fun back there!) Good spot to have a picnic consisting of sushi, pizza, sub sandwiches....all of these are available close by on...
