I thoughroughly enjoyed this place. Although born in Manitoba, I am of German descent and going here, I was able to see the experiences of German settlers as the worked to establish a home, and community in the Petawawa area. This site is not always staffed with knowledgeable volunteers, but we were fortunate enough to have people reenacting day to day life, answering questions and telling us what each piece, tool etc did or was for. Often there is 1 guide speaking, or even just a self guided tour, where you are left reading from a sign, or from the pamphlet. I enjoyed seeing the model trains, using the scrub board, and ringer washing machine to hand wash and hang a dish towel on the clothes line. I laughingly donned the dunce cap in the school house and enjoyed pretending I was a pupil there. The Carpenter demonstrated turning a spindle, we saw and heard the 'Johnny on the spot' motor. I recommend that anyone who would like a window into this early life of our community and our country plan a visit...
