Museo Maggiorino Borgatello — Attraction in Punta Arenas

This museum is certainly 'good' - some interesting exhibits, generally well-curated and worth a visit.

However, I found the lack of criticality of certain captions - particularly those regarding the role of religious leaders, the plight of indigenous peoples and the role of fossil fuel companies - to be highly problematic. Fortunately, the image of the last member of the Yagan tribe speaks volumes without any proper analysis of how this came about. To take one example, a particular religious leader who died during World War I 'gave his life for the welfare and salvation of the native peoples of Patagonia'. Did the indigenous people need 'saving'? If so, from what? Can the annihilation of a people and their culture be described as 'welfare'? Similarly, a different Catholic leader is described as 'loving' certain groups as his 'children'. The uncomfortable patronising tone of this kind of comment sounds even more uncomfortable when one reflects on the abuse of so many people in all parts of the world at the hands of some, though not all, Catholic leaders and the systematic covering up of these actions. Finally, one floor, probably sponsored, does well document the contributions of fossil fuel companies to this region; however, there is extraordinarily little attention given to the environmental consequences of these activities.

The museum is rather cramped. If new premises are secured, then it would be useful to provide places for visitors to rest other than a few chairs just inside the museum entrance. The Antarctic section of the museum is very good, but could usefully...

O Museu Salesiano é uma boa alternativa para quem quer conhecer melhor a história da região. Possui coleções sobre a zoologia, botânica, geografia e, é claro, registros de manifestações sócio-culturais da região, além de apresentar inúmeros episódios importantes do processo de ocupação da região por colonos europeus.

O custo do ingresso de entrada é baixo (2 mil pesos em 13/02/2019) e o museu inteiro pode ser visitado em aproximadamente 2 horas. É preferível realizar a visita com guias para ajudar a filtrar as informações mais importantes e, é claro, contextualizá-las.

São três os principais pontos negativos:

1. Ainda que seja necessário reconhecer o contexto histórico e cultural das histórias relatadas pelo museu, não há uma avaliação mais crítica do período de "colonização". Em que pese a necessidade de reconhecer o papel dos Salesianos no registro e estudo da região, não há em nenhum momento uma análise explícita das mortes de povos indígenas que habitavam a região, nem mesmo o regime de apagamento cultural a qual seus descendentes foram submetidos (o Museu Regional de Magallanes - Casa Braun-Mendez é mais honesto nesse sentido - talvez por ser um museu público e laico)

2. Trata-se de um museu religioso - e esta é uma constatação, não uma crítica. Mas é preciso ter esta dimensão em mente ao visitar o espaço. A abordagem adotada para se referir ao papel da Igreja Católica na colonização é bastante parcial.

3. Há um espaço destinado a apresentação das riquezas minerais (sobretudo petróleo) da região - patrocinada pela Empresa Nacional de Petróleo, uma estatal chilena. É um espaço interessante, mas não se trata de um museu, e sim um showroom da empresa, ou um espaço publicitário. Não há nenhum espaço dedicado à discussão dos impactos ambientais da extração de petróleo.

A despeito dos pontos levantados, trata-se de um bom passeio - mas que deve ser realizado de forma mais crítica - e deve ser complementado com a visita de outros...

The exhibition is very interesting and well presented. The entry is 7.000 peso, only by CASH. Check the opening hours before your visit. In 2025 Feb, the entry is 10AM-12:30PM and 3pm-5:30pm, and it closes 30min after the last entry.
