An amazing experience that my kids especially enjoyed. We took the cable car up and the famous toboggan slide down, but still got plenty of exercise hiking on top of the actual wall as it winded up & down the surrounding mountainous terrain. So much fun! Such breathtakingly beautiful scenery!
Fun to go up and down makes the Mutianyu Great Wall one of the more popular sections of the Great Wall of China, especially for families. It is one of 3 sections of the Great Wall that I’ve explored over the last 25 years and I believe the most family friendly.
It’s about 70 kilometers northeast of Beijing, it is easily accessible yet less crowded than the more famous Badaling section (which I did 10 years ago in the off season & it was very crowded). This section of the Great Wall is an excellent choice for those seeking a more relaxed and enjoyable experience with young children. We took a bus there & back. At the entrance there are many eating options, Chinese & western. My kids decided it was time for Burger King, and after a month in China without western food, I gave in. It was surprising very tasty.
Mutianyu offers a safe environment with well maintained paths, guardrails, and accessible facilities. There are even rest areas on the wall selling snack. This allows parents to explore this magnificent historical site with peace of mind, knowing their children are in a secure setting.
Additionally, the area around Mutianyu is surrounded by breathtaking natural beauty. The lush greenery and rolling hills provide a stunning backdrop, making it a perfect spot for family photos. There are even cute wall cats that are fun to interact with (bring some treats!).
One of the most thrilling activities at Mutianyu is sliding down the toboggan. It is the only section of the wall with a toboggan slide. This exciting ride covers a distance of about 1,580 meters and takes kids on a winding journey down a metal slide. The ride offers spectacular views of the surrounding landscape and is designed with safety in mind. Protective barriers and controlled speeds ensure that children can enjoy the ride without any risks.
Just know that you can control the speed on the toboggan, it has a hand pull break and it uses gravity to propel forward, making it a fun and interactive experience. Whether you prefer to go fast or take it slow, the toboggan ride adds an extra layer of excitement to your visit to the Great Wall. But there are guards along the route keeping a watchful eye and I was told to “slow down!” a...

Read moreWe hired a car going to the great wall so we didn't experience queueing up for bus to the entrance and for the tickets. If you're not going to rent a car, there is a public bus going to the great wall entrance for the rides going up.
Options: you can either choose to walk, take the cable car or chair lift going to the wall. Chair lift is open, so you can opt for the cable car if you're a little scared. It's the same price anyway. You can choose the same ride on your way down or try the toboggan. The toboggan is a slide with brake control, looks scary but it is quite safe as you can choose whether to go slow or fast.
Hours to spend: one to two hours is enough for taking photos. But if you want to hike to the next section, you have to spare at least 3hours.
Restaurant: there is subway and a local restaurant down the wall. If you're in a hurry, better get a sandwich from subway. The vegetable fried rice from the local restaurant is good, but we waited for quite some time for our orders to be served.
Tour guide: if you wanted to know more about the history and have someone explain the parts of the wall, you can get a guide for 900rmb. This includes hike to the other section.
What to wear: we went there end of March. Weather was at 16 degrees Celsius but it was sunny. I was wearing shirt, long skirt and a cardigan at that time and it was fine. You may want to bring extra jacket to keep up you...
