We chose this homestay due to its proximity to the Great Wall of China and the positive reviews we saw online. This was our first time staying at a homestay, and while we had an overall good experience, we’ve realized that this style of accommodation may not be the best fit for our family.
Pros:
The owner was friendly and responsive to all texts and emails, which made communication easy.
Dinner at the homestay was a standout. It was probably one of the best Chinese meals we've ever had—definitely a highlight of our stay. If nothing else, the dinner experience alone was almost worth the stay.
We felt safe and secure during our time there, and the surrounding area also seemed very safe.
We appreciated the complimentary coffee at breakfast and the free transportation to and from the main gate of the Great Wall.
Cons:
We felt like we were being charged extra for things that could easily have been handled on our own at a lower cost. For example, the taxi ride offered was nearly 40% more expensive than booking one ourselves, and we purchased our own Great Wall tickets to avoid extra fees.
The charge for water with our dinner (around 50 cents per person) felt unnecessary. While it wasn’t a large amount, it gave the impression of being nickeled and dimed for something so basic.
The room itself was fine, but it was a bit odd that the main door opened directly into the family’s living room. For those unfamiliar with the homestay concept, this may feel less private.
The bathroom was clean and spacious, but the soap and shampoo bottles were mostly empty, which felt like a lack of attention to detail.
The exterior of the house was just okay—not bad, but not impressive either.
Final Thoughts: While we had a good experience overall, the small details—like the extra charges and the shared living space—left us feeling that a homestay might not be the best fit for us in the future. For those who are comfortable with a more intimate, family-style setting, this homestay may be a great choice, but for our family, it wasn’t quite the...

Read moreI recently had the pleasure of staying at Mutianyu GreatWall Wangshanyuan Homestay, and I can't recommend it highly enough! When Mr. Yang picked us up at PKX airport, we arrived at their hotel, and his mom served us a warm, tasty dinner. It was 10 p.m., but they made us feel welcomed and cared for.
The spacious, beautifully decorated room was perfect for our family of four and provided a comfortable retreat after a long day of travel (coming from Tokyo).
One of the standout features of our experience was the airport pick-up and drop-off service. He was punctual, professional, and friendly, making the transitions between the hotel and airport seamless. It alleviated a lot of the usual stress associated with traveling. Of course, this is optional, and you need to pay on top of the hotel booking, but I highly recommend it. They served us a complementary breakfast, and he took us to the Great Wall at 8 a.m., allowing us to enjoy this ancient marvel (with five other tourists, so it was still empty). We were back at the airport by 11 a.m. with enough time before our 1:45...
