Our stay at the Grand Hyatt was all around a very disappointing experience. The location of this Hyatt is great. It’s withing walking distance to the Canton tower, the Pearl River walkway, a nice park with a pond (great for families with small kids) and lots of restaurants. The staff were also very attentive and courteous. However, given all the issues it has, I would recommend staying at a different hotel in the area. I’ve stayed at the Four Seasons a few times for work and my husband had stayed at the St. Regis during his work travel. Both are great options.
The rooms at the Grand Hyatt are not in great shape, the design and layouts are not practical or even that aesthetically pleasing, and the workmanship is very bad. We went with a group— three of us had suites and two others had standard rooms. The rooms had nice views, you can tell that high end fixtures and countertops were installed in the bathrooms, but the workmanship is horrible! Bad execution all around with no attention to detail. You could see the glue/cement that oozed out of the shower head installed in the room we used. It was also installed at an angle that meant you had to shower awkwardly. Even more disappointing was the half bathtub that was installed in a massive shower and bath combo. The tub was very deep but less than half the size of standard bathtub. I used it to bathe my son and had a hard time coming in and out of the tub that offered nothing to hold on to. A death trap! Our suite’s shower, including the bathroom would not have been friendly to an elderly or disabled person. A tiny closet toilet room was installed in our huge bathroom that had a lot of waisted space, and half the movable space was occupied by a tiny ridiculous sink. The sink was so small that it was impossible to wash your hands without getting water all over the floor.
We ate at the restaurant which had slightly better food than the lounge and offered great views of the city, but the food we got at nearby mall was much tastier. The food at the lounge was an embarrassing display. The breakfast display had 4 muffins and a few other pastries, other than apples, bananas and hard cantaloupe no other fruit was offered. In the evening, they had two bottles of wine that were guarded by the employees and we found that their teatime was nothing more than a cheap display of launchable like sandwiches. I have stayed at more modest hotels that have had better selections.
During our last night, we were woken up by a loud noise over our heads. We couldn’t see where it was coming from and didn’t want to scare our son who was sleeping in between us after we saw the tiny crib without sheets that was left in our room for his use. We could hear something hitting the wall and felt debris on our heads and faces, so we got up and moved to the living room. A wooden fixture that hung from the ceiling, right above our heads, had a wood beam separate and was about to fall off. Thankfully, there were four visible nails that kept the beam hanging and from falling on our heads. This happened around 11 pm on our 4th night. My husband went to the reception area while I took our son to one of the other rooms. The staff were very responsive and had maintenance come over to remove the beam. Of course, this was not the staff’s fault, and they responded as best as they could, but I share this note the bad shape of the hotel. If you’re staying in room with a wooden fixture over your...
Read moreOverall solid quality hotel in a nice location. Located in the central office area with easy access to the APM subway line and the World Mall park this a good choice if you are visiting one of the many companies in the area or if for leisure you would like to be in walking distance of the landmark library and opera buildings or jog in the park. The hotel has a lobby and restaurants on the 22nd floor which means you first take an elevator up to the lobby and then another elevator down to your room. Interior of the lobby and restaurants are modern and spacious. Rooms are quite large but do not feel spacious due to the fact that the layout of the room gives a lot of space to the bathroom. Bathroom has a walk in rain shower and a square bath which looks a bit uncomfortable but can be used by most people up to 180cm tall. Water pressure is good and the toilet is situated outside of the bathroom. As in a lot of hotels in China there is a glass window between the bathroom and the sleeping area, it has an automatic blind that can be closed for privacy. The King beds are large and have a view of the wall to ceiling windows. There is a desk for with power outlets that fit UK, EU, US and Chinese plugs so you do not need to bring an adaptor along. In the other corner is a small sofa and there is a water cooker to make tea or coffee. Rooms also have an iron and ironing board. Rooms are generally in good condition, some of the materials used however have a color that gives the impression that they have wear and tear marks. The hotel has a 25 meter indoor swimming pool with a large hot water area next to it, you need to wear a swimming cap which the sell at the pool reception. There is also a sauna (men and women separated) and quite a large fitness are with the usual hotel fitness machines. The breakfast buffet served in the market garden is good with western and local specialties, if you would like a quiet breakfast get there by 7.30 as rush hour starts around 08.00. The evening buffet in the Market garden café is also good with dishes from all over the world freshly cooked. It is a bit expensive but the quality and choice of the food is good. Staff are very friendly and there is lots of staff around, most speak English quite well. There is an ATM that accepts European debit cards on the ground floor. Hotel has free (China firewall) Wi-Fi for guests and in...
Read moreI stayed at this hotel with my partners from 2009 to 2019, but when the pandemic hit, we stopped coming to China for three years. This time, I decided to come with my family, and here's what we experienced:Terrible service: they provided the cheapest baby crib and the cheapest bedding. There's not even a children's play area, and the breakfasts have become just awful compared to what they used to be. I gave them children's pasta to cook, and they just poured boiling water over it and served it. It was horrible. We left a valuable children's plate at breakfast and when we came back the next day, it was gone, and they said they didn't have it, which means they either threw it away or stole it.The waiters barely understand English, and only after someone senior came over were we able to explain what we needed. We were constantly stressed and decided to change hotels to one with excellent service, and I am writing this review from such a place, where the service, crib, and food are top-notch.But the most terrible moment came at the end when we were checking out. I simply asked for help as a tourist with calling a taxi through an app, as I had a lot of luggage and wanted to order a minivan, but I didn't have any money on my WeChat. I offered to give them 100 yuan in cash if they could help call a taxi. The chief manager approached and rudely and arrogantly stated that such a service does not fall within our hotel's policy, refusing us even though we were standing there with a child in our arms asking for help.I was appalled by his behavior and stated that this was a terrible hotel that had gone downhill, and I asked for a complaint book to write all this down, although initially, I just wanted to leave and forget everything. But in response to my request for a complaint book, he handed me a piece of paper 5 by 5 cm in size and said, "Here, write on this." When I asked what this was, he replied, "Write your complaint here," and when I asked him to provide a real complaint book, he answered that the hotel does not have one. When I asked to call the manager, he said he was the manager.I was shocked at how arrogantly and rudely he treated the customers. I have stayed at Hyatt hotels all over the world - in China, Indonesia, Europe, Japan, Russia, but I have never encountered such...
