Baba Nyonya Restaurant is a relatively new (to me) Malaysian restaurant in my hood. My colleague and I paid a visit after work for a quick afternoon tea. The afternoon tea set menu was quite attractive, and the food was legit Malaysian food.
I took time to make up my mind which afternoon tea set I want to get, as a number of them looked pretty good. Finally, I got this Fish Tofu Laksa with Oil & Rice Noodles. The two pieces of fish tofu were absolutely amazing! Juicy and meaty, yet not too fishy. I adore both the oil and rice noodles. And the laksa soup base was simply superb, love the sweet/mild spicy flavor! I ended up sipping all the soup with the noodles. Right portion for afternoon tea or even an early dinner.
The afternoon tea set also came with a drink. I chose Malaysian Milk Tea and again, it’s a lit one! Strong tea flavor, with smooth milk texture. Very enjoyable indeed.
Yet, there is one thing about this restaurant which makes me hesitate to visit again — the hygiene inside the restaurant is quite horrid, even in this pandemic time. Unfortunately after waiting in line for 15 minutes, the staff let me inside the restaurant, and right away I get to be treated the same way I would take care of someone I don't like.. with no decency, lack of attention, no manners, not even bothering to point me a table, etc.. I just feel lost.. finally they seat me and my friend in the tinniest table possible (even considering they had many tables available). I'm European, and the staff ignored the fact that I am not a mandarin/ Cantonese speaker, and in fact they just gave me a menu in Chinese.. I know they have English menus, at least they have them online...so why not to help the customer getting their food, this for me was racial discrimination . but this was the first time the staff totally ignored my appeal for some help to read the menu or to have a menu in English.. I did my best to get my situation solved but I got the message that I should just leave and my presence as a foreigner here was not...
