The Hong Kong Railway museum is a specialty attraction in Tai Po, making use of a declared monument and historic Tai Po Market Train Station (1913) as well as a historic locomotives and passenger coaches. The museum is located at the corner of Shung Tak and Yan Hing Street in Tai Po, around half way between Tai Po market MTR and Tai Wo MTR Stations. Opening hours are 10am to 6pm (Wed to Mon), closed on Tuesdays. If you are a history buff or have interests in old trains, you enjoy a 30-45 minute visit to the Hong Kong Railway Museum. Also if you are looking for something fun to do with children and plan to be in the Tai Po area, this is a neat free attraction worth spending a bit of time. The Tai Po Market Station has a traditional Chinese temple exterior, the interior is divided into three rooms which are used for exhibitions. One is setup like the ticketing office of an old station and the other two provide information about old rail stations around Hong Kong, locomotives and the general history of rail over the past 120 years in Hong Kong. The exhibition rooms have been redesigned and given a more classic feel recently. As you exit the back of the old station you will find the famous Diesel Electric Engine No 51 named after former Hong Kong Governor Sir Alexander Grantham. This locomotive was used between 1955 to 1983 as a passenger train in HK. There is a small Narrow Gauge Steam Locomotive as well as six passenger coaches from various decades. You can enter passenger coaches, walk through, have a seat and just think about what rail travel would have been like in the past. Note - Unfortunately, during the Covid-19 pandemic, this coaches are are not available for entry at this time. However, during normal times, they are quite neat to experience as part of your visit to the museum.

This charming open-air museum offers a pleasant escape into Hong Kong's railway history at the beautifully preserved 1913 colonial-style Tai Po Market Station. Visitors can explore vintage train carriages up close and discover exhibits tracing the development of the KCR line. While compact in size, the museum's authentic atmosphere and well-kept artifacts create a nostalgic experience. The free admission makes it particularly appealing for families and railway enthusiasts. Though lacking modern interactive displays, the museum's simplicity is part of its appeal. Pair your visit with exploring nearby Tai Po Market for a fulfilling cultural excursion.

If you are a train lover and you are in Hong Kong, this is the place that you should visit. The site itself is really an old train station, this made the museum more valuable to visit. This is also one of my best like museums. Most of the trains, cabins and locomotives on display are all those we were taking when we were young. Walking trough the station, we felt that we were walking in the history. The old days and the old trees were just like 60 years ago. A nice place for you to know the rail road history of HK.
