There are two main racecourses in Hong Kong which are Happy Valley and Sha Tin. Happy Valley is more centrally located and mainly holds night races on a Wednesday, known as 'Happy Wednesday'. Sha Tin is slightly further out but quick and very easy to reach on the MTR. Sha Tin generally holds day races on a Sunday each week. This is more a local place. I went to Sha Tin on the last Sunday of the year. Huge grounds. Massive with a beautiful setting. Take the MTR to Fo Tan, not Sha Tin. Take Exit C and follow the signs or do what I did and follow the crowd! In around 15 minutes, you will reach the racecourse. Take your passport or something to show you are a tourist as general admission is free for tourists. You can access nearly all the grounds and from what I could see and understand, sit or stand anywhere! General opening time is from two hours prior to the first race until the end of the last race. Races started at 13:00 the day I went. I got there at 12:15. I explored the grounds, watched two races at 13:00 and 13:30. Races start punctually, every 30 minutes. They are over quite quickly! There are normally ten races scheduled for a daytime meeting. There is a Digital Zone, Tourist Zone and all sorts of entertainment plus a food court. I am not into horse racing and came mainly for the experience which I really enjoyed. Very cool atmosphere. The one and a half hours there was enough for me to explore the grounds, watch two races and take in the atmosphere. Clean. Staff were pleasant and helpful. The first time I watched a race, I sat down which was nice for an overview. The second time I stood towards the front which was even better, as you could really get up and close and hear the speed as the horses flew past. The atmosphere from the crowd was electric even though I didn't understand anything! I was there early and it was busy but not super busy. Complimentary WIFI is available throughout the grounds. Check the website for full information including fixtures for both Sha Tin and Happy Valley. Both racecourses are operated by The Hong Kong Jockey Club. Would...

Read moreReally cool place for the public to visit and buy tickets to watch horse races every week. would recommend for any tourists. Has an apparent dress code but nobody of staff are enforcing it even at the private members club dining area. Can even walk in with trainers.
The area is quite big and has several entrance gates so ensure you mention the gate number when meeting people as to not be confused. Taxi stands are also difficult to navigate for Uber as Uber drivers get confused as well and the racecourse really needs to improve the navigation for taxi pick up areas specifically for pre-booked taxis.
Staff are very helpful and the stands are never too packed. A comfortable venue which can be explored and great fun for betting for as low as...
