You'll find one of Hong Kong's oldest temples dedicated to Tin Hau, Goddess of the Sea, at the Tin Hau Temple Plaza on the west side of the Tuen Mun River. This temple is over 600 years old and was originally built by local fisherman at what was the seashore long before reclamations and the building up of Tuen Mun. Today it is situated noticeably inland, along the river and across from Tuen Mun Park. The temple was greatly restored in 1990 given it the appearance that you see today. The exterior is grey brick but with a yellow creme colour coat of paint. You'll see a decorative facade and entrance and traditional two hall, three bay architectural layout. Within, there are shrines in the back of each of the three bays. The centre shrine is must interesting, holding a statue of the deity, Tin Hau along with other traditional items of worship. Look for the large scale model of a wooden sampan in the left bay and the ancient drum and bell which dates back to 1697 in the right side bay. Interestingly, the Hau Kok Tin Hau Temple is the site of important Tin Hau Festival Parade and Fa Pau (Floral Shrine) celebrations held in the plaza in front of the temple on the 23rd day of the 3rd month on the Lunar calendar. You can learn much more about this important these festivities and see examples of the floral shrines at the Fa Pau Exhibition Hall located in a separate building next to the Tin Hau Temple. The exhibition hall is open from 10am to 6pm daily (closed on Mondays and during Chinese New Year).
